If it's making loud sounds perhaps people should stop testing for this issue as it may be damaging the IS system of their $5K lens.

After learning about this thread on canonrumors.com and reading through everyone's comments I tried my 200 on the 5dmkIII and the sound the IS makes is pretty nasty. I tried a very brief test with my 70-200 f2.8 IS mkII first which seemed to operated exactly as it should.
Absolutely. The challenge this early on reading this type of issue is determining how isolated or widespread it is. I only had the lens on long enough to see if it was in fact going to happen with my gear as well. Now that it has been confirmed its pretty obvious I won't be using this lens until a fix has been issued.

Would a fix be by way of a firmware update or is it possible it is a hardware incompatibility that would require a physical change to the camera to implement?

should be a firmware thing. the EF mount is fully electronic communications between the lens and the body .
this does sound the most extreme instance of a problem, but its not the first compatability issue between lens and new body that has needed a firmware update.
I seem to remember the 85L and and at least 1 newer body having issues (fast battery drain comes to mind?)
Hmmm. I picked up my body on Mar 22nd and I have a fifteen day window to return it. I don't yet own 200/f2 but have been considering one for some time now. It is a bit of blind faith to think it will be resolved - as previously mentioned, in Canon's opinion, it may fall within 'normal' ranges.
It sounds like the 200/2L is the only lens affected. That's a relief. I'm grateful that he took the time to test them all out. I guess some alt glass is affected too. But at least the rest of our glass should be good to go on the 5D III. For now I'll just use the 200/2L on the 1DsIII or 1D4. I hope this doesn't happen on the 1DX.

From the TDP guy Canon has USA responded to my 5D III IS noise inquiry:
"The EF 200mm f/2L IS USM and the EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM, when IS is turned on with the 5D Mark III, the Image Stabilizer will "buzz" louder than when on other camera bodies. This is considered NORMAL operation." http://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/News-Post.aspx?News=2170
Why is it the case? I am worried that the NORMAL operation will unnecessarily wear out the mechanicals of the lens. No one wants to pay for repairs on a $5000+ or $13000+ lens
Also it was reported that that the 800mm did not exhibit this behavior so we must now expect this?
Not too sure I completely buy this answer yet. This seems to be a larger problem then they are aware of... or that is my hope at least. How can 10k of camera equipment be passed of as sounding "normal" when making this type of noise!
They have taken out the wording "normal operation" in the updated release, or at least I didn't see that wording anywhere. Looks like they don't think its normal anymore.
Normal operation ? I do not know what you are talking about ?
This is what Carnathan says:
Updated: Canon EOS 5D Mark III and EF 200mm f/2 L Image Stabilization Noise
Canon USA has issued an official response to the 5D III IS noise issue:
“We have acknowledged that when using the camera with specific lenses, there is an abnormal noise during IS operation when the shutter button is pressed halfway (or remains pressed halfway), and we are now considering the countermeasures. We will let you know about the countermeasures as soon as they are finalized”
The two affected lenses are the Canon EF 200mm f/2.0 L IS USM Lens and the Canon EF 800mm f/5.6 L IS USM Lens.
Note that image quality is not affected by the abnormality. Also note that this noise does not occur during Live View including during video capture.
They removed the original response that the noise was "normal". What you're reading is new text that replaced it. Apparently enough people that own $5k+ lenses made a stink that someone in upper level smelled a call to action.
