I've been away from this thread for a little while, as I've been reviewing the Zeiss 16-70 for NEX. I went out this morning to shoot a waterfall that I found earlier in the week (and was quite glad to pick up my Fuji gear again). There are lots of waterfalls in Ohio, but this one is pretty remote, and the path to it isn't even marked. It's named Fallsville Falls (how unique!) However, it's one of the prettier falls I've seen.

Here's a barrage from the shoot (plus one as the sun rising before I arrived). All with the X-T1 and the 18-55 and 14mm, except for the first one, which is with the 55-200.

Nice pictures Jordan. The very first one is my favorite, with the third one close behind. What a beautiful spot you found there.

Thanks

Adam

Thanks. Most were just with a polarizer, though I stacked a 3 stop ND on the polarizer as things got brighter. Only the 2nd and 5th shots have the ND in addition to the polarizer.

I just purchased the 55-200mm per the glowing recommendations here. I've yet to try it as it's still in the delivery box.

Now, I'm already eyeing the 18-55mm f/2.8-4. What are your experiences with this particular lens? Those that have used/sold/traded it? Does it feel "cheap", how fast is the lens AF compared to the other Fujinon lenses that fall in the same FL? Any issues with the vario aperture?

I'm going through this thread and I see lots of 56mm f/1.2 photos (looks like another winner!) and few of the 18-55mm kit lens.

For me, this range would cover the wide and normal focal lengths, which is great since my current widest lens is a 35mm cron.

The 18-55 is very good. (Most of my shots above are with it today) it's good wide open, especially at the wide and normal range (a little softer at the long end, but still decent), but it's very good stopped down. I'm normally a prime shooter in that range, but I've loved using the 18-55 as a landscape lens, as it's good throughout the range into the corners stopped down, and is far more flexible. I still use my 23/1.4, 35/1.4 and 56/1.2 far more, but the 18-55 has gotten a lot of use. It is built pretty well (mostly metal). I got mine used for $350.

The 18-55 is a great lens. Fast focus, solid construction. No issues with it and a very convenient range.

The 55-200 is also awesome, but a bit slower focusing. OIS works excellent. Bokeh is very nice when you induce it.

I took some quick snaps in my backyard with the Zeiss Touit 50mm Macro (x-mount version) and the XF 55-200mm that just arrived earlier in the morning. It wasn't the best of light (harsh light mid day) and the sky was a bit hazy. It could have been a fire as I could slightly smell something burning in the background.

I just want to thank those in this thread (and a few many many pages back) for recommending the 55-200mm. I really like the way this lens feels. Also, I was quite impressed with the quality of the photos it rendered. Hooray! Now onto the photos.

NOTE: This shot is blurry (when original size is viewed at 100%) as the branch was swaying in the occasional breeze and I was trying my best to not shake. I was about an inch away from this bud too! Just love how close I can get to fill the frame. Such a blast!

Thank you for your input! I'm leaning on pulling the trigger for the 18-55mm before my trip next month. This should cover the 18-200mm FL with only two lenses. If you follow rumors, the 18-135mm should be officially announced(?) next week. I'm curious about this lens as it also has weather sealing. A few online stores have the 18-55mm on sale ($100 off MSRP) until July 2nd. Hmmm....

Jman13, you mention that the 18-55 is a bit soft on the long end. How does it compare to the 55-200mm @ 55mm?

Wide open, the 55-300 is a little sharper. The 18-55 is fine in the center at 55mm, f/4, but the edges are a little soft. Stopping down sharpens them up pretty well, except for the very extreme corners.

Trying to get as much magnification as possible, I combined my 55/2.8 micro-Nikkor with a full set of Chinese extension tubes, which gives slightly below 2:1 magnification. This is slightly cropped:
