Got my X-T1 today. I'd say it has a high chance of replacing my Nikon kit.

PhotoNinja V1.2.1, the flower highlights may not be correctly reproduced. Let's see how V1.2.3 does.

I am thinking hard what lens to buy for my newly aquired X-E1.
I have a Nikon Adapter, and many ZF Zeiss lenses from 21 to 100,
plus a leitaxed Leica 60 mm Macro. I also have a Telyt 280/4
which I want to use with the X-E1. So the longer focal lengths
are covered with the full frame lenses. I thought I buy a shorter
lens as walk about lens. The camera should be pocketable with
the lens. The lens shouldn't be more then 400 or so second hand.

- so there is the 27/2.8, the 18/2 and maybe the 35/1.4.
They are quite different lenses, and I am not sure which one
will be the best for me. 1.4 would be nice for DOF, but I'd rather have
a shorter focal length, thus 18 would be better. It should be small,
so 27 would be the best.
IQ seems to be best with 35 again, and so it goes round and round...

I only want one lens for now, since I am not sure I want to keep the
XE-1 yet.

thanks for any help in deciding between those 3.

Even with the 27mm I wouldn't consider the X-E1 to be a pocketable camera

Out of those 3, I would go with the 35. The 27 is small, but only has a 2.8 max aperture. The 18 is underrated but considered to be the worst optically out of all the XF glass. Plus later on having a 14/35 set is a good starting block for Fuji primes.

This is with the 35mm at iso6400. And only at f3.2. Insane quality.

that is true, the 35 is certainly the best lens optically of the 3. So the 18 is considered worse than the 27?

well, purse-able maybe... at least the 27 is half the depth of the 35.
I bought the XE-1 mainly as a converter to give me 600mm with the Telyt 280/4 + 1,4f - will see how
that works out. I am planning on keeping the D700 with all the ZF lenses as my main system.
So the XE-1 with the lens I am buying will be the small, light variant to carry with me all the time, when I don't want the big system with the heavy Zeiss lenses.

I would agree. When I put 27mm on my XE-1, it makes the combo very very compact. It's not jean-pocketable I know, but jacket-pocketable for sure.
XE-1 and 27mm is the best " point-n-shoot" camera!

However, I also have 23mm 1.4 and I have to say, the 23mm lens is in different league.

I got a 27 rather cheap in the bay just today. I will see how I like the combo. I am aware that it is a compromise and not the best offering Fuji has optically. Most lenses are considered better.
If I stick with Fuji I will sure build on the lenses and switch to XT-1. XE-1 and 27 are my cheapo pocket-
test set, to find out whether I like mirrorless or not.

thanks for the replys.

love the flower shots, nice mood and rendering.

I purchased 27mm couple months ago at its full price and i had to return it because lacking of sharpness. I felt bad about that lens. But then when the price came down as rebate, I tried again and now I have a really good copy, quite sharp at 2.8. So I got a bad copy at first.
I also got 23mm 1.4 and I have to say 23mm is amazing. But 27mm is very good for the price though. When I detach 23mm from my XE1 and replace it by 27mm... then wow... the combo is totally different in size and weight!
XE-1 and 27mm combo is so small and light ( much smaller and lighter when it goes with either 23mm or 18-55) that I believe many people would think it a point-n-shoot camera ;-). Very low profile while taking great pictures.
For the price at it's now, 27mm is worth to get for XE1/2. Enjoy yours!

Low profile shooting is a good thing. When I go for the more expensive lenses, I'd have to sell some Zeiss lenses. Not ready for that yet. If I don't like the 27 I can still sell it and get 35mm instead.
I am sure the 23 is something different, it also has a different price tag unfortunately.

Normally I'm a raw shooter, but I've been impressed what I can do in camera with the XE-1 just by tweaking the JPEG settings. Here's one of my first from the new-to-me XE-1:
