Were you using my X-T3 BIF setup when you had these problems?

There is a point after sunset where I'd remove the TC for better tracking. With the TC off I could track a subject till about the point where it was so dark I lost color vision. This is an example of that using a Sigma 10-600 C:

With my X-H2s, tracking is better in very low light with the TC on yet it's better with it off due to the extra light. For portraits I'm happy to use the TC in low light.
If you want to do this type of work, spend the extra for the X-H2s as it is the tracking king and just plane faster.
This is the setup I'm using for the X-H2s:

I wasn't, actually. I have to admit I haven't spent a lot of time tweaking my X-T4's AF-C tracking settings, only setting it to "erratic" initially because that seemed to track better from (very limited) testing. I primarily focused on keeping track of my zone... making it as large as I could could without being affected by background clutter. I was shooting primarily migrating cranes at the time, and that meant a large zone for BIF and the smallest zone when they were on the ground.
I found a photo from one morning, and it was 1/1000 f/8 ISO10,000. Very low light indeed. I gave up on the XT4 in lower light after watching it seek on BIF in this light while the Z6 locked on pretty much every time.
I'm definitely going to give it another shot, cause my XT5 should arrive today. Thank you for taking the time to post your AF practices and findings. I'll use your research this time, and I suspect I'll have more success this time, even though my testing will only be with the 55-200 (my longest X-capable telephoto at the moment).
