"Hidden in the green" is probably my favorite shot. It's gorgeous. Your focus is sharp and spot-on, though there are a few which might benefit from composition tweaks. In particular, in the second picture, the blurred out plant appendages/flowers are pretty distracting, especially the ones that directly face the viewer. Great work, though. Having done some indoor butterfly shots myself, I can appreciate the challenge associated.

Ah a fun day in the Butterfly house, it can be rewarding and it can be frustrating!

1 at least they stood still for you Nice to see them in that stage, something that for most of us is really hard to find in nature
2 I like the commanding posture and comp, make the little guy look dominate. The narrow dof is working for me
3 nice sharp bug, not sure about the bright purple in the fore
4 Really digging the

#1 That little box of those I always find fascinating Tim, the chrome like skin is cool

#3 I understand
#4 I liked what I saw and tried my best but missed the mark by a little on this one, yes soft is the correct call. Less centered is a good idea

Well, well, Mr Witt does the flying equivalent of fantastic Florals!
I am very impressed with these indoor shots
1) thanks for including these, amazing look
2) love the detail in the eye, the comp doesn't thrill me, but looking at it, I'm not really sure how you could have done it different either
3) little bit of a peek a boo shot, love the colors and the comp
4) Very interesting shot, like the comp, really like the wing detail and color, not a nit, but do wonder how it would look cropped with the stem right in the left upper

Lar, not a single on in flight, just like my florals
1 you are most welcome
2 OK
3 thanks!
4 comp needs work, I worked too hard on the techs and not enough on the compo
5 sweet

Thanks for you extended insight my friend....

Hi Carl,

Beautiful detail and color in all of these lovely images. I like to photograph butterflies with flash and to do this I put my diffuser on my SB800 and tilt it up at 45 degrees. This give a nice soft light that comes from above creating gentle shadows with the nice rich colors you have shown flash produces.

Nicely done my friend.
1 is interesting and seldom seen. I'm glad you included the shot.
2 You nailed focus on the body/eye here, but the wing position is working against the dof.
3 Nice angle on this one, and I like the sharp eye and wing.
4 Great exposure and very nice detail, but the dark bg hurts this one - for me.
5 & 6 Not much to say here but super shots.

On a side note, cross your fingers as Benzzene is supposed to join me at the GBH rookery tomorrow for a sunrise shoot.

Ron

Thanks much on Hidden in the green

Though I do not disagree on your thoughts of the blurred out plant appendages I see it a little differently. The color nor the light intensity of the plant is distracting in my opinion on this and the natural lean of this flower toward the subject quickly points the viewers eye to the eye of the butterfly. I do find very light colored objects with no definition (blobs) most distracting when they are OOF and in the foreground The other shot with vibrant magenta/pinks IMO is a bit more distracting of the subject.

I am glad you voiced your thoughts, always interesting on how others accept or interpret an image, thanks for your thoughts.
Stop by again......
