I really like my X100, I can live with the slow AF etc and the slow start up but right now my problem is about taking it overseas (England Scotland and Singapore) as my main camera on a 6 week trip. so far I've had no sign of the sticky blades issues and have taken over 3000 photos. I have chatted among friends who own the camera and some who don't and the consensus is that the X100 tends to be unreliable and that I should take my 5DII. I'm not keen on carrying the 5DII around but hate to think of the X100 failing me. Has anyone here done a decent trip and taken a LOT of shots with no problems with a Fuji X100? .
I'm about to find out. Taking the X100 with me as my only camera** on a trip to France next week.
I haven't had any issues with the X100, aside from the idiosyncrasies associated with its awful menu system. But it terms of camera function and especially IQ, it's been a great addition.
** - I might take a 5DII with the 85L as well, but I wont have a backup in the 35-50mm range.
Now I think I'm going to drop the 17-40, since its only purpose would be for landscapes, but I can simply shoot panos with the X100 for that. I'm mostly interested in street photography, anyway, so it's not like I'd be shooting a ton of landscapes.
The X100 + 5D2/85L fits nicely into a Billingham Hadley Small, which can also hold my wallet, keys, and phone. I'm all about portability these days.
I have had an X100 since last July - I have nothing but amazing photos from it - I just looked at the count = 3194. It has not failed me yet! If you can live with a fixed 35mm focal length - it is a wonderful travel camera.
maybe I could take the X100 and my G12 as a backup, probably would only use X100. I love my 5DII but not enough to turn my holiday into being about carrying heavy gear everywhere. Its a few months away so will say how well the X100 holds up between now and then.
You know, I sold my 5D2 and Zeiss glass after spending a year hauling it all over Europe. I told myself I hated how heavy it was and went with numerous smaller systems. I have had 3 X100s and like you found the FL limiting at times when I really needed longer lenses or better IQ. Unless you are concerned about the gear being stolen, and you have a nice backpack to carry it all, I say take both unless your old and frail and just can't carry it all. Would really suck to miss some great shots being limited with what you have on hand but with stitching, pano, and walk zoom, you should be able to get by. I say take it all to be safe and be sure you have a converter for charging the batteries. It's only a month and those pictures will last a lifetime!

you have a good point there, carry on restriction on the airline I take is 7 kilos, hopefully I will keep the weight down under that
Well mine failed me, twice. Once when the VF curtain got stuck halfway down, and a couple of months later the whole shutter button assembly fell apart in the middle of my European trip (although that was possibly my fault because I had a soft release on and it probably got caught somewhere). Both times Fuji fixed it under warranty, no questions asked. So first of all, if you're using a softie, get rid of it
If you really like the camera and it worries you just get second one. Get a used one, just for the trip, and sell it when you get back. I'd still take an x100 with me now, it's not so much a matter of small or light but more a matter of quiet and discreet and more likely to use in places and crowds I'm not familiar with. I just know I'd make more photos with it than with a DSLR. More is better
I will say that if you bring the X100, make sure you have a couple of spare batteries. If you make heavy use of the OVF with overlays, you'll absolutely tear through batteries.
I have a couple of the Lenmars to complement the OEM battery; that's usually enough for a day of heavy shooting.
