D4,D800, D800E, D40(not a miss print),14-24mm, zeiss w/ aperture ring and a series of new f1.8 g lens. Oh too easy to choose Nikon now! Or, has it always been?

No, I think both Canon and Nikon are kings of the hill for pushing each other. The competition between the two is like a chess game without an end; both keep making their moves and we are reap the benefits of their innovative ways.

The only thing Nikon is missing is a match for the Canon TSE lenses.

Probably Canon wants too much money from them to do it.

Not yet. Nikon also needs a modern 135 f2, 800 f5.6 and an answer to the 5DmkIII (provided it can AF)

Reading from day to day endless threads on forums about competition, it comes to mind a question do people actually take photos and learn the nature of light? The question what is better is relevant only if you have no camera, but if you have one, it is surely better of them all: you are free to take it and shoot anything, you have it already. Blabbers around first place have no points of significance, because they have nothing to do with photography point why we all spending money on camera and lens park.

Just shoot something, learn how to post-process what is already taken and you'll see very soon that all those 'King of the hill' threads are absolutely empty and worthless.

and an MP-E 65

Not sure what's so game changing about the 5D3, though. It may be better than the D800 in some regards, but the files still look plasticky to me.

Don't forget Canon's radio triggered speedlites.

But none of this diminishes the fact that D800 is an extraordinary camera body.

I'd love to hear your logic on why the D800 isn't a direct competitor to the 5DmkIII.

Matching Canon's TSE lenses would be #1 for myself as well. A 135/2 would be great. A few Canon guys I know with the 800 also have a 600 or 500. One will sell his 800 as soon as the 200-400 arrives. Lots of $ having a 800 & 600 at the same time, more than I could justify.

I think the D800/E has the 5DMKIII covered. I'd be curious to hear your thoughts as well Will.

And an updated 80-400, an updated 300/4, an 800/5.6, and ideally an MP-E 65.

But I agree that Nikon's lens lineup is now pretty darn complete in my eyes. Missing a few things, and could be improved in others. But certainly capable and without any serious or glaring weaknesses.

Will, if I speculate based on the performance of currently-available bodies, the D800 will have more MP, probably equal noise performance in the real world even without resizing, and better AF performance than the 5D3. And it's cheaper. What part of the 5D3 needs an answer in your eyes?

From what speculation I have heard is that the D800 competitor from Canon will be released at Photokina along with a hearsay 14-24mm L. But only time will tell...

John, have the rumors you heard said anything about theoretical specs and pricing? Hard for me to figure out where they could put a "D800 killer" in their product line.

I am guessing here, that Will is being sarcastic. Just a guess tho.
