I had 28-70mm and 80-200mm 2.8 af-s for few years, they were great lenses. With technology chaging so fast , I had to get rid of most of my old equipments to meet up. I heave read a lot about 24-70mm but never used one. Is it advisable to go with 24-70mm on the new trend of bodies or buy the old venerables I know best. I am leaning on the new D800.

The 24-70 is better. Only you can say if the cost difference is worth it.

That's pure marketing.... what do you expect from Nikon, to tell you to use 50/1.8 E on D800?

They want to sell the big guys!

It's darn near impossible to find an in depth test of the old 28-70mm f/2.8 AF-S on a D3x, I myself have always been curious how it performs by the numbers versus the updated 24-70. All I've ever seen are user anecdotes about the old one and raves about the new one.

I did a test on a D700 with a 24-70 and 28-70 wide open and on screen you could see a little difference, 24-70 a little less AC, but on a 100% print I had to check the file numbers on the back of the print to tell which was from which lens.

Looking at the pictures from my old gears , sometimes makes me hesistae selling them. But things have changed so fast that makes me feel like I am still living in the 18th century still holding unto them. From software issues with PC and printers, talk less about my D1x whose shutter almost died b/4 selling it. I love the skin tone of the 28-70mm but the features of the new bodies are very promising . Like jammy said , till we find some comprehensive test on the new bodies, it will be difficult to make a wise judgment.

I have never shot with a 28-70 but my D700 and the 24-70 is an awsome combination.

More than any other minor differences, I'd rather have that extra 4mm on the wide end.

I've never done any rigorous, side-by-side comparisons, but subjectively I thought my old AF-S 28-70 f2.8 was sharper and more contrasty than my AF-S 24-70 f2.8G.

I wondered if I had just gotten a "bad copy" of the 24-70, because it was also noticeably less sharp than my Canon EF 24-70 f2.8L or my EF 24-105 f4L IS.

i haven't seen comparisons either but my 28-70 works well enough on my D3X that i haven't felt a need to upgrade. the wide end is the weakest on the 24-70 and that is also my strongest because of my Zeiss 25/2.8 so i haven't felt a need to update. when the AF-S motor wears out or something else like that happens, then i will reconsider.

Maybe worth a read of photozone.de of the 24-70. I've shot both, and prefer the image from the 24-70 over the 28-70. A bit more contrasty and a challenge to get flaring
