I'm looking for some extra shallow DOF abilities that I used to have with Canon, typically for Bridal Prep. Unfortunately the 85 1.4 (D or G) is currently way beyond available budget so I've been looking at alternatives.

Since we have both DX and FX (D300 and D700) it occurred to me that the 50 f1.4G on the D300 should approximate the 85 1.8G on the D700. Is that a reasonable assumption?

I know the 50 is only 75mm equivalent on DX vs the 85 on FX, but then it's also 1.4 vs 1.8.

The 50 f1.4 would also give me a backup for my 24-70 whereas the 85mm is too long.

Any thoughts on this approach, good or bad ?

Do you have both and can produce a reasonable comparison?

Hi Dave,

You need to know that the DOF of 50/1.4 wide open used on D300 is not at all shallower than the DOF of 85/1.8 wide open used on D700.

Also you need to look for the quality of bokeh... from what I saw posted by others 85/1.8G provide a more pleasant bokeh than the 50/1.4G, a lens I owned in the past w/o to impress me. If you want to go for a 50 you better choose Sigma 50/1.4 for a better character and bokeh.

So, in your place I'll pick 85/1.8G or, if manual focus is not a problem Samyang 85/1.4 is a steal for the money.

Thanks for the reply. I assumed that it wouldn't be quite as shallow, but the question really is how much difference is there?

It's hard to find this sort of comparison on the web
