Anyone see this. I only have the pre-defined smart collections. Everything else seems OK such as Web templates, user defined print templates, etc

No. When I upgraded it auto selected my main catalog, I set the destination for the upgrade (not the default) and it did the upgrade. I do not see a separate section for collections.

Re- converted my LR3 catalog an it is OK now. Sorry but I have no idea what the original problem was.

I went back and manually opened my main LR3 catalog in LR4 to trigger the conversion again and re-saved it. In the original conversion it auto selected the catalog and the image count is slightly different (~32500 vs 32300). Apparently it was not the correct one before. However it still should have had plenty of collections.

Don't you just love intermittent problems

They undermine your confidence in both the program and yourself because they cannot be reliably repeated when you want to.
