p.1 #1 · 5N Comparison: kit lens v. 16+50 on LA-EA2

Just a few comparison crops of the 18-55 NEX kit lens versus the 16-50 via LA-EA2. All at f/5.6, on a tripod, using remote + 2 sec. timer. The 16-50 took +7 pts. MA. Processing on these is auto tone + LR preset "narrow edge sharpening". ETA: kit lens is on the right.

Could be the LA-EA2 but the 16-50 hard edges don't look quite as well defined and there is a bit more fringing.

Thanks for doing the comparison, I've been thinking about picking this up to replace the 16mm and the 18-55. How is the real world performance on the 16mm end?

Just got it yesterday, so I have not shot it much... I'd go out and shoot today, but it's whipping snow around. I'll probably be able to try some infinity/outdoor shots tomorrow.

Could also be that I didn't hit the MFA perfectly. I am going to print out a different test chart to play with. 16-50 looks a lot better at the long end to me, though I think most people would prefer their portraits to be slightly blurry.

Hmm. I see more fringing and softer edges on the right column. That's the kit lens, right? Maybe its my monitor.

That's what I see except for at the wide end, where the kit looks a little better defined and with a bit less fringing (the 16-50 however has a ton more contrast)

I see more fringing on the right (kit).

I couldn't tell for sure if the kit is actually better - the focal length difference between 16 and 18 makes such a difference at the wide end. If I post another set, I'll try to get them both at 18mm. Just have a new test chart coming off the printer...

Second set. I tried a different target, and didn't think it was an improvement. This is with the 16-50 MA'd to +9. Light has changed in the greenhouse, and is much less contrasty. Kit lens is on the LEFT.

ETA: I'll shoot a set in closer to look at corners at 16 and 24.

Might as well throw these in... A couple of 100% crops from real world shots, at f/2.8 and f/3.5 - normal processing (55% sharpening).

ETA: And my last comment for the day on this topic:

Weight of the 5N + Kit lens = 17.5 oz.
Weight of the 16-50 + LA-EA2 = 30.5 oz. (no body included!)
