I'm not sure about other lens makers, but Canon's latest big white (and some black) lenses have a mottled/speckled/textured finish. Does anyone know what this type of finish is called, and how to achieve the same finish on something when painting? Thanks.

I'd order matching paint from Canon as a first step. There are chemicals that can be added to paint to achieve a crinkly finish, but its hard to match old work.

I can't say how Canon does it, but a similar effect can be produced by using thick paint (as in viscous, not as in the depth of the layer) sprayed at low volume and low pressure to sparsely cover your subject with thick drops, allowed to dry, and then over-coated with regular/thin paint at normal volume and pressure for an overall coat that covers the subject completely, but allows the dried paint drops underneath to show through.

It's a variation of the "orange peel" paint texture.

(If you're on or near Kadena, you might strike up a conversation with someone from Civil Engineering (718th CES Housing Maintenance Flight, in particular) and ask him/her to teach you how it's done in exchange for a pizza and a beer, or something.)

Brain, that was exactly the information I was looking for. Yes, I'm near Kadena (I work on Futenma) so I will go over there and ask how. The Korean guy at Park In Style has repainted several lenses and is able to achieve that same speckled look as original Canon lenses, so I was wondering how he does it (See http://www.petapixel.com/2012/02/17/camera-lenses-with-custom-paint-jobs/). Thanks!

The "scale" is different, of course, when you're painting a wall versus painting a lens, but the idea is similar and may work as a launching pad for your own ideas and experiments.

Good luck.
