p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Zuiko 100/2 HELP! Bad Fringing

This is a worst case scenario with my new-ish Zuiko 100/2 and red/green fringing when used wide open. When it's as bad as this what is the best fix?
Also, does the ZE/ZF 100/2 do this as badly?

Best fix is to reduce purple saturation. In this shot you shouldn't have any other purples or such, so it shouldn't affect the rest of the image.

I think that means only in Photo Shop then?

You call that bad ?

This is an old lens, isn't it ?

Well it's the worst I've had anyway!
This is one of the later designed Zuiko lenses introduced after the OM-4, but in terms of digital that means "old" I suppose.

Nearly all older, and many new, fast lenses will do this. Desaturating the purple channel and/or using the defringing settings in your processing software can be useful tools, but I don't anything is a replacement for avoiding it or working it around it on the front end. Being very careful about overexposure will help, and this might just be one of those moments when the photographic gods are telling you that shooting a high speed lens wide open in bright, contrasty light with specular highlights is just not a great idea.

The Zuiko 100/2 is one of the few Zuikos that have ED glass and is supposed to have better CA correction...

In Lightroom you can also adjust the separation of purples (without affecting other colours). Edit: Of course I meant saturation, not separation.

Thanks Smiert, I've only just entered this world of wide aperture lenses and finding out what works and what doesn't, so your comments are very helpful. Probably in the same situation the ZE/ZF would have similar problems?

I don't own the Zeiss, so can't say for sure. I'd expect it might be a bit better, but I wouldn't expect miracles.

I've gotten myself worked into a frenzy a few times when testing new lenses. Every 85/1.4 I've owned (all of the Nikkors, and the Sigma) will do this. I sometimes shoot a torture test (clothespins on a line, with extra points for being wet with a bright overcast sky in the background) that immediately raises my blood pressure and makes me feel that the lens is clearly flawed. Then I drink a beer, consider what I actually bought the lens to do, and everything's ok again.

Use Capture One Pro for RAW processing. It can fix purple fringing with just one click.

Samples I've seen from the Zeiss ZE 100/2 wide open show a lot of purple fringing, perhaps worse than your Zuiko.

Capture One Pro is even more expensive than Lightroom, any other solution that isn't as expensive? I believe Aperture isn't very effective at this and my preferred DPP only has it for native EF lenses.
Thanks dickb I think I've read something similar about the MP 100/2 somewhere else now I think about it.

See, timbalic, doesn't that make you feel better?

Thanks Smiert, dickb posted the same link and it reminded me of others that talk of the MP 100/2's high fringing wide open. As you said, this is probably a trait of all such lenses....and yes it does make me feel better (in the pocket.)
I just wish it didn't do it!

On that link there is this comment: "Instead, the Contax 2/100 MM version shows CA in out of focus areas - while the AE copy ..... does not. I am sure that a change in the lens design was made between the AE and MM version. "
Can anyone else confirm this difference between the MM and AE Contax versions of the 100/2, I admit to being sceptical!

I'm sceptical too, in the first place because the samples in that thread are more operator error than anything else, IMO, and then the surprise that 50/60mm lenses have less CA...

To which thread are you referring? In the thread I referred to only samples of the Zeiss Makro-Planar 100/2 were shown and the CA in those were clearly not the result of operator error. I'm puzzled how any sample of purple fringing or CA could be the result of operator error.

I'm saying that simply because those samples from Klaus have too little DOF, so they are bad examples IMO.

A 100mm lens at close focus distances at f/2.0 will give pictures with very shallow DoF. To me, that it the point of having a 100mm f/2.0 macro lens. Why make an f/2.0 macro lens if you can't use it wide open? To call that user error or bad examples is ridiculous in my opinion.

There are tons of samples on this forum that show that it can be used wide open with very impressive results. Those macro shots are still poor samples for what they are supposed to depict, IMO.
