p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Travel Kit for New York City

I will be traveling to New York City for business and want to bring my 5DII and a couple of lenses to travel (somewhat) light. The lenses that I own are the 16-35 II, 24-105, 70-200 II, 50 1.2, 135 2. I would appreciate any recommendations.

16-35L II, 135L and a small 270exII flash or the 24-105L IS and a flash.

I did the very same thing recently. The 16-35 was super useful for city scape shots. I also got great use out of my 50/35L for street stuff ( I bought the 35L at BH while I was there). The 24-105 got a bit of use but invariably it wasn't wide enough for me or too slow in the mixed light. With so many people in such a small area it's nice to be able to separate your subject(s) from the craziness that is NYC and that's where a 50 or a 35 comes in.

When I go back I will take the 35 or 50 (that choice will be a struggle), the 16-35 definitely and maybe the 24-105 although I might just take my 100L instead of the 24-105.

Mega-cities are just a different travel subject and my usual preference for the 24-105 just didn't pan out.

I always over pack when I travel but I used my 24-70 on a 1.3 cropper exclusively when I was in NYC back in September, so I'd say 24-105. 70 was kind of short for people pictures. 105 won't be much better on a FF but it'll do.

In the city 16-35 and fast one for low light in your case 50 1.2(definitely going to appreciate in low light) and probably 135mm....

Ha. I was mugged in St Louis once but I've never had a second's trouble in NYC. YMMV
Of course I shoot Nikon so . . . ;-)

I bought the 16-35 explicitly because I found that I often wanted wider than a 24 in cities; I'd certainly take the 16-35 to the greatest city in the world.

With your choices, I'd probably choose the 24-105 second, and the 70-200 third (if you're not going outside the city).

YMMV

For NYC, I'd say the 16-35 and 50. The 50 comes alive at night.

I shoot there from time to time, and I'd take the three zooms. YMMV.

Thanks for all the input. I'm still debating what to take but at the rate I'm going I'll end up taking most of my kit which I was hoping not to. Right now I'm thinking to take the 16-35, 24-105, and the 50 1.2. Still have some time to decide...

I live in NYC. With so many things to shoot, do you have a sense of what you'll focus on? My guess is you're likely to grab for the 16-35, 24-105 and 50L the most.

I'd probably leave the 70-200 and 135L at home, but could give a better recommendation if I knew what you were likely to shoot (bridges, cathedrals, Times Square, Central Park, Grand Central, Rockefeller Center, night/day, etc.).

I'll be in NYC for 5 days but because this is a business trip I will not have that much free time. I'd like to shoot Central Park, Manhattan, Brooklyn Bridge, Times Square, and some night scapes.

I was just looking in to this and actually just posted a new thread in Forum & Misc asking for specific recommendations. Realistically, a photo guide with a flexible schedule would probably work best but I would appreciate any recommendations.

I lived and worked in NYC (Battery Park City), but we all like different things so as everyone has said, YMMV.

I'd say take the zooms, especially if a) you like architectural details, and b) you'll be in buildings with views. The 24-105 will obviously be the most versatile, but they'll (zooms) give you the best chance of getting the shot you want in limited time.

I'd probably leave the 50/135 as they're both FL duplicated.

I found the 70-200 (f/4L IS in my case) to be very useful in NYC, if you are interested in compressed shots, like of buildings, focusing on building details, etc. I used it quite a lot in Central Park too. My kit there was the 16-35, 50 and 70-200.... but I'm not sure I'd want to walk around much with the 2.8 due to the weight. But since it sounds like you won't have a lot of time for wandering around, it might be a reasonable compromise. Or just bring the 135 and a 1.4x TC in its place. I have a few sets on Flickr from NYC and Central Park (click on the Flickr icon below).

Get to Brooklyn Bridge Park at some point and head to the area between the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges. There's an area with rocks right off the water that many photogs shoot from.

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Brooklyn+Bridge+Park,+Main+Street,+New+York,+NY&hl=en&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=28.058077,62.314453&oq=brooklyn+bridge+park&hnear=Brooklyn+Bridge+Park,+1+Main+St,+Brooklyn,+Kings,+New+York+11201&t=m&z=14

If you have time to shoot during a sunset, I'd suggest heading to either Brooklyn Bridge park or if you're bye Times Square consider heading to the Top of the Rock to shoot some scenery (costs roughly $20).

As for the gear to bring, unless you plan to capture detailed shots of buildings, cathedrals, etc., I'd leave the 70-200 and 135 at home. The 50L might come in handy in the evening, but isn't as important as the 16-35 and 24-105 will be. Just my $0.02 and other may suggest differently.
