YES! But not for you.

I'm not bashing you either. It's not for everyone just like all cameras. It's just that unless you are printing big stuff and have some decent experience... there isn't a big enough difference to justify the money involved... for you (and many others)

Yes the video will be nice, but unless you've shot video with a dslr and know the ups and downs, you are better off with your handy cam for that stuff.

Here's how I decide if its over kill: if i go in debt, for no apparent reason, its over kill.

In my opinion, you should only buy a camera when you can actually articulate why you need it over your current gear. What need will it help fulfill that you currently can't get - or can't get as well - from your D700?

If you want video of your kid, might be worth considering.

Worth it? Doubtful

Overkill depends on your financial situation. If its a hobby and you can afford it, why not?

Honestly, video on DSLR's is not the greatest unless you plan on putting in the effort. I think a lot of people dont realize that 99% (if not %100) of videos made with DSLR's have tons of supporting gear to get the quality you see.

My suggestion is to not look consider the video aspect of the d800 into consideration because 9/10 times, your handycam will be much better suited for family vacations etc.

If you can afford a D700 then I'm not sure going into debt is a huge concern since you are probably talking about $800 to $900 difference.... sell the D700 for around $2100 and buy the D800 for $2999. Assuming your lens collection is what you want and your computer is decent you will be good to go.

If photography is your passion, then you need to price your passion's worth.

It may be overkill but I agree if you can afford it and it makes you happy, why not? Ferrari owners don't have to drive theirs 200 mph all the time. For hobby it is very subjective. For pro/business, the calculation is easier.

If your profile is updated and the only lens you have is niftyfifty forget about D800 and invest your money in two great primes like 24/1.4 and 85/1.4 and you will thank me later

Yes, IMO it's overkill for your purposes. You ask this question on a gear forum? What answer do you expect?

The video will be nice for sure. However,

I would look at picking up an SB700 flash and an 85mm f1.4 lens, if, of course, you don't have one. Probably a 16-35 f4 for some wide family portrait stuff.
You'll love it.

Back t the video, I'd keep using the handycam. I know you probably want to get an all in one unit, and that's a valid point. But the video on SLR's is for more serious users. If you want to do the normal family holidays, the handycam is actually much better suited.

TIP. Limit panning and zooming while recording. Download it to the PC/Mac immediately and do you're editing. Otherwise, it'll sit there and you'll never get around to it.

You sound like a very proud dad. I'm sure you're getting some nice shots.
