But your perceived "facts" do nothing to sway my opinion, because to me, they do not invalidate my concerns. Will you concede at least that?
What Facts? That computers have replaced smoke signals?

Unfortunately, they won't influence your pre-conceived notions. That's your inability to look at the big picture, not mine. OK, I'll give you that. You win, since that is what you want.

No I just want you to have to bend your view as much as you want me to bend mine. I can see the big picture, and I don't like it!

I've acknowledged that things change, and in the proces some traditions we love, industries we show allegiance to, and processes we're familiar with are murdered as a result.

I'm ok with it. I see it as progress. You don't. The end.

Nope. But I believe in this advancement. It depends less on the environment. It wastes less resources, in general. It has infinite reproduction value. It saves revenue on freight services. It's deliverable much quicker and broader. It also puts less junk in the trash heap when it's time to let things go, to name a few.

It also incorporates far more information than a singular book in just one singular device and or service.

"Barnes & Noble College Booksellers also operates the self-proclaimed "world's largest bookstore," located on Fifth Avenue and 18th Street in New York City near Parsons The New School for Design. This flagship store carries a large variety of textbooks, medical books, and medical supplies in addition to the various trade titles carried at Barnes & Noble's main stores." Wikipedia

What! Medical supplies? Why that's quite Amazonish of them. I wonder who reaps the profits from a $250 college textbook. Anyway, congrats Barnes & Noble, because in an the age of throwaway college books every parent really looks forward to being gouged $1K per semester on hard cover books. What happens in the future is more about the demand for printed books, not how one company is evil and the others are angels from book land. Barnes & Noble also has an exclusive contract with Starbucks to sell their coffee. I mean why would I want to go to B&N for coffee when I can go to Starbucks directly.

Anyway, this was a lovely troll. A more reasonable topic might be; "Why I'm not going to read anything on the internet anymore because it takes away from paper book/magazine/paper sales."

Typical Forum BS. If one doesn't agree with you they are wrong.

You're really quite a jackass Skark. I never resorted to personal insults or made fun of you, as you have repeatedly done to me. Border, you're not much better!

Now I'M done...

Man-up! If you're going to post ridiculous things, you're going to be challenged. That goes for all of us. Don't take it personally.

Border, you're not much better!

I will have to disagree there because "I'm Good Enough, I'm Smart Enough, and Doggone It, People Like Me!"

Give me a break...Amazon is doing nothing but lining it's pockets, they have no interest in furthering anything but their own narrow interests.

What else besides their own interests (i.e. money) would a successful company act upon? If they did not, they would not exist.

Books can hardly be considered antiquated forms. A book printed on a Gutenberg press can still be read today. I defy you to read anything on a Kindle in 20 years, much less 600.

No. Flawed argument. Books, in their physical forms, will always deteriorate to nothingness over time.

Digital media are infinitely reproducible and convertible. In their "data" forms, they will always outlive their physical counterparts as long as we have the means to read and redistribute the data. The data is the soul of the book; the book is the physical body.

As long as we have power and computers, "anything on a Kindle" will last, quite literally, forever.

Anyways, have you been a student recently, or do you have children in college, or even high school, right now? I'm not sure you could have such a stance if you had recently paid for school books. I was lucky to spend less than $500 on books per semester, and I didn't even have a technical or science major, where books are significantly more expensive. If we could replace these books with digital versions for a fraction of the cost... well, I'm thrilled at this possibility. Not to mention textbooks are f***ing boring - imagine the multimedia you could integrate into an interactive, tablet-based e-book.

Well Skarkowtsky, you're done because you're wrong. You get your hackles all up because someone offers a dissenting view to yours. You get angry and condescending. Not a good way to win an argument.

My experience with Amazon is bad, and I am entitled to my opinion. I am completely entitled to NOT shop there. No reason to get so pissy about it. I'm not really sure why you're so defensive of Amazon, perhaps your stock in them is not doing as well as you hoped?

I used to frequent ABE before amazon. I don't use ImDb, don't even know what

Just clicked on this link to see what it was about and came across this post. IMO, the same could be said about you...someone puts up a differing view, and you get YOUR hackles up. You don't want to shop at Amazon? Great....then don't. No reason to go on and on about it...because not many of us really care.

Well - I am all for digital age - but I do like books and the feel of physical paper. That being said, when I started reading from Kindle - I did not miss my books much.

Other thing is - papers ultimately consume trees although now a days the use of chemical pulp and recycling has increased.

One thing I did not like about what Amazon did was their 5% discount on products when people go to store and capture the barcode thru mobile phones and come out not buying that. This was a cheap shot.

Google Shopper already does that - gives you the cheapest product in your local area/online if you search a particular product.

So last night I was reading a computer magazine in my iPad. I was reading specs on 1 page and wanted to compare specs of another product on another page. I was like hmm. I can't seem to be able to hold a page like a I can on a real magazine and be able to quickly flip back and fourth.

Eh no biggie. It won't happen too many times. Then I found myself wanting to compare 3 different specs on 3 different pages. Hmm. Well this is now getting annoying. Okay I know what I have to do. I have to buy 3 iPads! Case solved.

But then I started thinking, I'm 100% sure someone will eventually make a grid view for multipage viewing and comparisons. I mean, after all, it would be kinda silly for an iPad not be able to do what a regular magazine can do, right?

This is what I call "rhetorical rugby." We have two determined combatants doing their best to move the ball toward the opponents goal line to score points. As happens in rugby, emotions get stirred, adrenaline flows, testosterone elevates. Ain't it fun? You guys keep moving the ball so you must be enjoying yourselves.

Of course, that either of you believes anything posted on this thread means anything to anyone anywhere is absurd. But that is one of the joys of the internet. Its like having a soap box at Speakers' Corner in Hyde Park where anyone can shout about anything they want, seemingly oblivious to the strangers passing who typically avert their eyes. Nowadays, of course, they're likely listening to their iPod as well so they don't even hear the ongoing rant.

Have fun guys...

Something has always killed something else off. Its the way the world, more specifically, technology, works.
