apparently shooting a bright object on a dark scene, the bright object gives a glow/haze/ghosting around it, but the rest of the object itself is tack sharp..even at f4

It didn't do that the first year i used the lens, but now it starts to giving such glows, which annoying at times.
I'm pretty positive it's the lens, not anything else..because i tried with another lens on my d7k, can't reproduce the glow.

time to send my tammy 17-50 for repairs?

Thats typical for tamron lenses wide-open or near wide open....tokina also exhibits it. Sigma to a lesser degree as well...I am surprised you haven't noticed it before.

That's not normal. Either there is moisture in the lens or on the rear element, or something got knocked loose.

i can rule out moisture.

hmm, there's a chance something knocked loose. it's not happening every single time, only on couple of photos, but especially on dark scene with white/bright subject.

Do you have a UV filter on it? If so I'd say try taking that off and see if it still does it. I've owned the same lens for about two years now and have never had this issue once.

I had the same problem with a Tamron 28-70mm lens. Dirty internal elements was the culprit. Open up the aperture with the lens off the camera and shine a torch through it. You'll probably see lots of dust in there. My 28-70 was a real dust pump. I had the lens cleaned and now it's perfect again.
