kind of a newbie question...what actually happens when a lens cant resolve all those megapixels?
can someone please post a sample where the lens isn't good enough to resolve a given megapixel?

It will just look like any other not so sharp picture. Most of those point and shoot cameras have by far more pixels than their poor optics can resolve. That might give you an idea.
