I owned a D3, I've played around with D700 and now with D7000 and I have to say I love a D3 body. I wish Nikon would release a D4x also with a 36MP FF sensor. I'm starting to have doubts this will even happen now. I mean, the D4x would have to be with a 52MP sensor now to make sense.
If there was going to be a D4x (doubtful) it would be about 12-18 months from now according to Nikon's past practices.
I think the D300s replacement will be a D400 (or other Dxxx name) as Nikon has said they are committed to DX and they really need a DX body in the ~$2200 price point. They need something to fill the gap between the D7000 and D800.
I think the D4x is gone..To me it looks like nikon and canon are going the same route to get rid of there high megapixel FF pro camera and make there sports cam the flag ship and the 5d and now d800 the high megapixel camera..

I think the X line will now turn into the D800 line in where it is meant to compete with medium format which also goes to show that Nikon leans more photography than Canon does which is now leaning hard towards video with their DSLRs.
Many people noticed that the upgrade path is out of synch, missing a true replacement for the D700 and a high-res pro body. What if the D400 is released as an FX body to match the D4, with a D8 as the high-res pro body and the D7000 already being the replacement for the D300?

I agree and I'd also be happy to pay extra for it. I may get D4 but I wouldn't mind to have extra pixels along
with the features D4 has.
I guess we will have to wait another 12 to 18 months to see if Nikon releases D4x.

What about the patent for an on/off AA filter, that Nikon has applied for?
Imagine that in a D4x!
And the built-in LAN that D4 already is equipped with. Also they will have D4x with a built-in GPS so that we can
still use the flash, the new fast XQD cards in both slots.

I'd buy a 36 MP 7+ FPS D4x or two in a minute, but I think we are doomed.
i don't think there is going to be a D4x either though i would prefer one just to be more compatible with my D4. it looks like i will get the D800E and deal with it if a D4x does materialize.
A D4x would imply higher FPS and buffer capacity-just about the only thing missing in the D800. I'm not certain if today's technology will support that. Certainly the Video guys don't care.

I'm not sure I understand your classification of it as a prosumer camera...
If your point is pros and non-pros will buy it, I suppose I get it (though I think that is a lame way to classify). If not, I'm really confused about what isn't pro about it.
In any case, it is pretty clear Nikon is re-thinking how they stack their product line. To the guy who posted that it wouldn't be expensive to put another sensor in the D4 body, it isn't about the mechanics of it. It has to do with all the testing, country certifications, and a wide range of back-end costs it takes to bring any product (especially one with batteries) to market. It isn't cheap. At all. Recouping those costs on a low-volume body isn't necessarily a great bet in this environment.
Given what it is probably taking them to overcome the business disruption from the disasters in Japan and Thailand, my guess is they focused on getting the D800 and D4 out, and developing the D300s follow-on, whatever that will be. If there is a companion for the D4, I think that is 2013 or maybe even later...
Nikon makes mucho bucks on their Pro line - I would expect they won't give that revenue stream up. They aren't going to dump their $8k camera line for a $3k camera (even though its excellent and many of us covet it).
Not only that, Nikon isn't about to throw their Working Pro customers under the bus.
