Looks like they will be similar in the center and near edges with the TSE a tiny bit better at the far edges and much better in the far corners, for sharpness, TSE a little bit better for contrast at the edges and with less lateral CA. Of course that is just computer simulations talking.
Makes it damn tempting - I love my TSE 24 more then any Canon lense i've owned - including the 85LII. i just wish they did include IS and internal zoom.
It's strange that there are several running threads on this lens filled with people bitching about the price, yet B&H no longer has them in stock for pre-order. And why exactly should Canon drop the price when they sell out 2 months before they're even available?
I'm very happy with the performance of my copy of the 24-70 MKI. The only reason to upgrade would be to get a lighter lens - it is but not that much, and to get IS - no IS available.
The field curvature at the wide end is not perfect, but is not a problem if you know how to handle the lens.
I will stick to my mk1 which is my most used lens on 5dmkii. Sure the new one would perform better, but who cares as long the MKI performs so good and is a stellar workhorse. Not worth an extra grand for me.

the old 24-70 was one of the worst lenses Canon ever made.
I understand that you did not like it. But your statement is not a common opinion out there!
Two possibilities:
a) you got a lemon
b) A huge number of professionals worldwide did not understand that one of their most used lenses was a lemon for a decade - and they are still using it and still do not understand that they are using a really bad lens
All this fuss about paying more for an increase in performance reminds me of noobs who are astounded at how much more the L lenses cost than non-L versions they can buy
Compared to the 2002 V1, the increase is actually quite modest and we have yet to see how much the improvement in quality is. The MTF charts only provide info for 30 lp/mm and the improvements may evenbe greater at higher levels of detail. So we'll need to wait for the newer higher MP FF body (ies) to see the whole story of what the extent of improvements actually is.
