The 7 is a very capable camera but it does not pretend to be a 1 series.
I make decisions like this all of the time. He says to himself, "Hmmm, lets' see... a 7d and a 35/1.4L and 50/1.2L or a 1DIV - how much better is the 1DIV?...".
See?

Really? Suppose you wanted to decide which one to buy, the 7D or 1DIV. Wouldn't it make sense to compare them?
Sure, but only in the sense that you're not sure of which feature set or what capabilities you want. I meant that in terms of capability, the two are in different classes and that it would be expected that the 1D4 would be the better performer. It's supposed to be. I guess it's no different than comparing the T2i to the 7D when shopping. Both are capable of producing amazing photographs (in the right hands), but the 7D is supposed to be the higher performing camera and lives up to that expectation because it's equipped to be so, just as the 1D4 is relative to the 7D or anything else from the Canon stable, with the exception of the 1Dx.

It's like saying you want to buy a new high end car . I can't see many buyers thinking "Do I buy the £30k VW passat or the £90k merc S class"
Both cars are well speced with lots of luxury, both will carry their passengers to their destination with ease. But if you have the money to spend you would still buy the merc.
Nice analogy, but I might actually spring for the new 2012 Carrera S...but that's definitely a fantasy, albeit a most pleasant one!
I agree with the basic concept of what you are saying but sometimes the features between Canon's different lines of cameras get blurred. For example, they will debut a new feature in 7d type camera before it even appears in the Mark series. Now I think you are correct that when it appears in the Mark series it is probaly better, but as all these cameras improve I wonder if the differences become less noticeable.
I don't think the 7d is as good as the Mark IV for a variety of reasons and of course it isn't meant to be. The reason for my initial post was just compare the AF ability of these 2 cameras becuase I have read so many times on various FM boards that they are very similar.
1. Are you using ai servo or focus/reframe? - user error can be very big here
2. If using ai servo, check tracking sensitivity- default is medium - fast means that it will jump faster btwn subjects - I have found in sports that at fast it causes more missed shots on 7d
3. Micro adjust can make a big difference
I have a 7d and now a 1d4 btw - 1d does best the 7d but for the amateur sports shooter- 7d is more than adequate and does a great job
