What I meant is that focus shift could be a part (undesired phenomena) of a fast lens design and it may vary (slightly) from copy to copy but not as pronounced as some described it but it would have less to do with the age/when the lens was manufactured. But if that what makes you feel more comfortable then by all means buy a brand new one. You are right though, the price difference in quite a few cases would not justify buying a used one.
