Hi All, I was lucky enough to buy the immaculate MDP from PeaktoPeek that he got from PetKal last year.

Wow, what a lens!

I did a quick search but couldn't find an answer to my question in the topic so I figured I'd ask as I'm sure someone here knows the answer.

I could never find anything saying that it is sealed against moisture -- doesn't mean that its not, I just couldn't verify it. I hope you enjoy the lens, I will miss its brilliant optical qualities but not the weight when I am backpacking.

Alright, I give. I've heard this "Magic Drainpipe" name for a while now. What gives? I take it the 80-200 was an incredibly good lens for the $$?

You could say that. It's a black L that resembles a...wait for it...drainpipe

with the hood attached.
Gorgeous bokeh/colors AND at 200mm wide open it rivals the 200 f2.8L in sharpness. Classic lens

If anyone else extols the virtues of the MDP anymore, I am going to be very sad -- I'm trying to forget how great it is and remember that I needed a lighter lens. Yes, its that good....

Thanks for all the replies! Much appreciated. I was pretty sure it wasn't sealed, but wanted verification before I decided to take it out in the rain...
I'll make sure to put a rain coat on it first.

A bit ironic that a lens known as the drainpipe is not water resistant?

Good thing Canon isn't responsible for the nickname, or it could be seen as false advertising!

since the MDP there has been 3 70-200/2.8's . the new mk2 IS is the only one I'd even consider giving up my pipe for

In hind sight, my Magic Drain Pipe was right on par with my current 70-200 f/2.8L MK II IS. I really wish I'd have kept that lens!!!

I'm sending it to Canon for a clean/check and calibration, if it comes back worse I'll seriously consider that straight trade option...

I can vouch for the IQ of the MDP. The greatest bang for buck in Canon line-up right now (considering you have to buy it used).

Never tried in the rain though, and i believe i never will.

I obtained one of PetKal's pipes from Tanglefoot. Great lens. I moved up(?) to a 70-200 MKII and sold the pipe locally. Like Reno, I wish that I still had it.
