As an elementary school teacher, I watched many younger kids playing on the swings, and they were always smiling. To me the greatest sadness here is that the adults in the community don't seem to care enough to maintain the swings for their children. Swings are fun in winter, also. Charlie: Not to worry, the young people still used it as is, they just put their feet on either side of the seat rung and swung like Tarzan ' guess some kids still have imaginations. I agree, the seat probably could be replaced or at the very least painted, but as for the rest of it, the only need was to reattach the chain to the hook at the crossbar of the swing. I think Charlie may have been bit harsh in his assessment of the community, as there seems to be 3 different types of seat on the swings, which would suggest some maintenance. To me, it's also an emotional statement by the photographer. According to the image, there seems to be no easy fix to the broken chain. That's an important part of what makes the shot work. I merely took the sentiment (apparent neglect) and carried it a bit farther (and I DID qualify my remark ). But as always- it's different strokes for different folks.
