In order to tag the elephant seals the interns run up to them, grab a flipper, and use this think to implant a rubber tag

The most common bones found on the island are not of the native birds, but from chicken legs and pork ribs. They are scattered absolutely everywhere.

So, the white posts are indicating gull nesting sites. The upper two numbers designate the year that the individual arrived on the island.

I thought this was funny... There's only one freezer on the island
