Translation:- Higher sensitivity rather than high resolution (marketing spin for the 1DX)

Makes me think that the 5DIII will be close to the 5DII's pixel count if it's released soon,
on the other hand, Canon could wait to see what Nikon & Sony release and see how the market reacts to them before committing to a low MP 5DIII, or add a high MP body above the 5DIII(1DsIV/3D).

It is now almost certain that a Sony FF mirrorless is in the works. Sony is also rumored to use an organic Foveon style sensor.

However I'd be amazed to see Sony make yet another system: They have alphas, Nexus, compacts, and yet another one? Seems odd to me...

Did you mean APS-C (i.e. 1.5x or 1.6x CF)? APS-H is the Canon 1.3x CF sensor size, and APS-'something else' is "Full Frame".

Regardless, I'm very pleased with the X100 APS-C sensor performance, and I'm really looking forward to finding out more about this camera.

Many small pixels are not going to beat current FF cameras.

You may be right, but you also do not know, what impact new sensor technologies will have on IQ. So far no company except Foveon (which are way too small and have had no history in imaging) has ever tried. They all built on the normal CCD/ cmos technology. Fujis new technology is new, so we may see on next Monday, 21:45 EST, and then in the following weeks and months what it is worth.

Digital photography and sensor tech in a larger scale is merely 10-15 years old, this is nothing (!), and you can only speculate what cameras will be like in another 10-15 years. I expect new sensor technologies in the next 5 years from several companies, 3 layer, and maybe others. They will bring important improvements, rather than small incremental evolutionary steps we have been seeing for years.

In the US there are experiments made by research teams about sensors that have far, far wider DR than anything available today. I lost the link, but the numbers were staggering. I am sure this is just the beginning, and in 10 years a 5dII or a D3 will seem just as advanced as a 2001 digicam seems today.

No specific link, but this is from interpolating info from several sources. The Sony FF mirrorless will have a Nex E mount and will take existing E lenses in cropped mode. Sony will introduce FF E mount lenses and the sensor will feature organic three layer technology similar to film. My guess is we would see this camera by the end of this year.

I do think the coming Fuji will be an interesting camera, but after the X100 I am somewhat skeptical. The X100 has a good sensor, but it is quite quirky...

About Fuji as a lens-maker, Fuji has never, to my knowledge, made 35mm AF lenses before, just Hasselblad H AF lenses, and compact camera and large format fixed lenses. It is not clear that they can design and build such lenses to the tolerances required, so a lot depends on them being as open with their system as Sony has been with the NEX.

The lenses for this new camera only have to be for crop sensor, like in the x100. If they only offer primes those are certainly easier to build than zooms (which they also are able to do, like the one in the x10 which is very good). Launching a system camera like the forthcoming one requires long planning, and I guess they are intelligent enough to check before, whether they are able to meet the optical requirements in order to deliver performance that can make the sensor look good enough for the market it will meet.

The x100 was a first new entry, after a long period of absence from the serious camera market. Finding new supply chains, finding out what works and what doesn't may require some time, their second offering the x10 - is already a much rounder product, apart from the white orb syndrome.

They declared that they want to grow considerably in the digital camera market, and I guess they have lots of know- how, once they have fine- tuned their development, supply and manufacturing chains those problems may dissappear.

Thanks, interesting indeed: no microlenses, no IR filter, maybe no AA either due to small pixel size, sounds like a very pure light path. Experts (on dpreview, like Dr. Fossum) have said that actual noise performance is difficult to predict.

BTW the already famous claim "better than FF technology" may also be result of a sloppy translation, I have already found a different translation that sounds more reserved. It may be that in the end the correct version would be more "which compares favorably to current FF technology", which would be a much more vague statement and may also be said about the Nex-7.

This is obviously the future of digital sensors. I think whatever Leica has planned for their upcoming M10, they should put it on hold and seriously consider putting a Fuji FF sensor in there.

I think Fuji is a big name in the cine/TV -recording world. I recall looking at some impressive lens models when searching for alt lenses for my old G1 a couple of years ago. I don't doubt they can make whatever they decide to make.

Organic sensors, eh? I am not sure I want to pay lots for a sensor which may eat itself or go furry

In the end, I guess we all hope for the same thing, although I am personally still very romantic and old-fashioned, and want an optical finder with TTL focusing on a matte screen. I guess I will be less happy than most people here when it comes out

Yes, this has always been my feeling. Unfortunately and to my frustration, they just had decided not to participate in the consumer photo market for several years now. Their old model of camera bodies for Nikon mount (S2, S3, S5 pro) was not profitable (no lens sales), and I guess they may have just waited for their new sensor technology to be ready for commercial release, which I hope will be now.

Do not know enough about their intentions really, but I am sure that if they get serious, we may see exciting new cameras and lenses by them.

BTW, what is this:

That's why I'm shooting film, the most organic of all. If any company knows how to give a film look to their digital sensors, that must be Fuji. I have high hopes in their organic sensor technology.

True, I have shots from my S2, and S3pro that look so film like, makes me want to run out and shoot my S3pro that still sits in my closet - well, it is night here, and raining, so maybe tomorrow :-)

And yes, if they manage to translate that look into a higher resolution camera ready for 2012, regardless of ISO6400 or not, 40MP or just 16, I will fall in love in a heartbeat.

Carsten, I'm sorry, at least somewhat sorry, for linking to your resolution. It came to my mind though... I think a sensible thing to do is to speculate less about these not yet announced cameras mentioned here and just hope for the best. The better the new Fuji turns out to bee the better will other future cameras also bee.

I know I'll look for the announcement and then see what more will happen during the spring. Interesting times indeed.
