35 2.0 can go on FX or DX
Would not AF on the smaller DX bodies

Image quality wise on a D7000, which would be the preferred lens?

35mm 1.8.

The 35mm f2 is great but the 1.8 is a bit sharper, faster, lighter, and cheaper.

Both. Buy a used 35/1.8 for your D7000 and sell for no or small loss when you upgrade to FX, trade it for a 35/2. I don't know what people have against the 35/2, it's a very sharp lens that gave me beautiful pictures on my D700. However, for a DX body I'd rather take the 35/1.8 as it's made with the high pixel density sensors in mind.

I've owned both. I sold the 1.8G for the 2D. I did not like the drawing style of the 35 1.8G. The 35 2D works beautifully on my D300s. Should be just the same on a D7000.

The D7000 has a focus motor - make use of it. The 35mm 2D focuses faster, has better build, and better bokeh.

The 35f2 is my walk-around lens most of the time. Love it. On both D7000 and D300. Haven't used the 1.8, so can't comment on it.

35/2 - I never warmed up to the 35 1.8, I find the 40G micro to best the 35 1.8 in all areas except f/1.8 lol

the 35 f/2 is excellent

Sorry, I've been out of it for a while. Do you mean that the lens tends to give images an illustrated type of look?

I love my 35 F2AFD. I tried the 35 F1.8G but I sold it to keep the F2 because I thought it was a better lens on my D300. Try them both to make your decision more accurate for what you shoot.

I owned the 35mm f1.8G--returned it because too much CA, not much faster than my 17-55mm f2.8 I owned a 35mm f2, did not like it either. Image quality not quite up to modern standards on a digital body. I ended up with the Sigma 30mm f1.4. It is excellent and the best that I've tried. Have not tried Nikon 30mm f1.4G. The sigma 30mm f1.4 is a pro lens, and clearly superior to the consumer Nikon 35mm f1.8. It does cost more though.

^ I mean this. The out of focus areas of the 1.8G are can be just really choppy and nervous. It's the same bit with the 85mm 1.4D - on paper the sharpness just isn't there, but there is something special going on that a test chart can't capture.

I had both and i like both,decided to keep the f2 since af much faster than the 1.8. Also I have fx and dx so works best on both.
