I have a 5D mkII on the way and now I'm deciding on lenses.
I'm leaning towards the 35 & 85 because I actually shot this set up on the 5Dc and quite liked it.
However, I'm hesitant to pick up the 35/1.4 due to all the rumours of a new version coming out soon.
I don't have the budget to pick up the 24II & the 85II. I shoot mainly environmental portraits and shows.

I think you'd be happy with the 35/85 combo. Even if a 35L II comes out, the current 35L is more than stellar. 35L i think is ideal for environmental portraits also. 24 is nice also, but i grab my 35 more often

Get a used 35/2 for now and then see what pans out for a new 35/1.4? You'll be able to sell the 35/2 for what you pay for it.

There are even rumors on a new 85mm 1.2 buy what you need now .. buy used if you are scared of sudden loss of value. Besides there is the usual delay between the announcement of a new lens and before they are available below MRSP. That should give you plenty time to sell in case you plan to upgrade to a newer version - if you need to.

Get the 35L now and use it until a new one comes out.
Even if they announced tomorrow (which Canon won't), the new lens will not be available for a very long time.
If and when the new one comes out you can see if it's worth the upgrade and sell the current one, which won't lose much value even if the new one is better. The cost of the new one will be quite a bit higher, if past upgrades are any indication. This will keep the value of the outgoing version high.
Of course all of this is speculation, but I think that they're all logical speculations.

I just got the 50f1.2 during the Canon refurb 15% sale for under $1100, but I'll probably return it. From early shooting, it's not the improvement I was looking for over the 50f1.4. The 85f1.2 looks like it's worth the extra cash, even though I like the "normal" focal length a bit more.

Interesting. Don't worry about lenses being outdated (they will be), but from your usage scenario I'd say 24+50 is the easy choice. Another option to consider is the 24L+Sigma 50+Sigma 85+cash. Many pros prefer the Sigma 85 to the Canon 85L (price, AF speed, coma and astigmatism correction in the corners, color), and the Sigma 50 is not far off from the 50L.

A good friend of mine is lending me his Sigma 50mm to give it a try. I might pick one up in a few months.
I wanted to get the 24LII, but honestly I owned the 24L mkI and I sold it because I found 24mm to be almost too wide on FF. Especially for portraits.
It's great for some applications but less useful for daily shooting.

I fluctuate a lot but usually settle back with the 35. Indeed to get an 85 but may just get the rokinon. Mf is fine fr the application.

I think I'll end up selling / trading my 24 and cash for a zeiss 21.

If you are ok with manual focus, consider Zeiss 35 f2. It costs the same as 35L.

So the 35 may fit your needs...but you don't want to buy it if another one comes out...

The 35L is pretty much perfect on that lens. 85 is nice as well.

I don't think the 35L can be improved much. It's a fine lens the way it is right now. 35L/85L II

Even if canon releases a new one...it'll be like a year or more before you can find one.And you can bet it'll be more money.
