p.1 #1 · Best main lens for Canon 400D?

Hi guys,

I am still using my old 400D and find that small file size is still beneficial for most purposes. I am looking for good alround lens in the 24-70 or 28-85 range. I would like this lens to have the following features:
- Full frame compatible as I would like to use it with such a body when I upgrade.
- F2.8 apperture as the ISO range of the 400D is not so large and I would like to stick to lower ISO settings where possible.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

Dimitrios

Well you have just limited yourself to only a few lenses.
Going down as Depending on the budget

24-70L
Sigma 24-70hsm
28-70L
Tamron 28-75

There are also a bunch of tokina and sigma lenses in the 24/28 - 60/70/80 range as well.

My vote if you could live with a step to f4 at the longer lengths would be the 28-80L . If not then the Tamron if on a budget and the 24-70 if not.

Hi Ian,

Thanks for your answer. The lens starting with 24mm would give a 38mm equivalent with the Canon 400D, something I would prefer to avoid. I think full frame lens starting from 14mm or similar would be best. Any suggestions?

Thanks
Dimitrios

17-55 2.8IS works really well on any of the croppers. I enjoy using mine very much. Very good optics and fast AF with IS.

If your looking to buy the BEST lens for your CURRENT camera in a "normal" zoom type range, then you're looking for the EF-s 17-55 f/2.8 IS. Before you try to give me the gobble-d-goop about the inability to upgrade to FF with that lens, let me give you my thoughts on that. Horse puckey !!!!
You'll be able to recoup 90%-105% when/if you decide to go FF. I've used a host of FF, 1.3X and 1.6X cameras, and 1he 17-55 IS justifies keeping a EF-s mount camera and vice-versa. Don't look at your future upgrade as a hindrance to not buy what's useful RIGHT NOW. I own one and use it all the time on my 7D, I also have a 1DII, and have relegated it to longer lenses and primes/tele use.

Well you said you wanted a ff lens around 24-70 (ish) . If your talking ff- crop equives then your looking at 17-50 type lense. If you want them to be ff lenses then your looking at 16-35 or the older 17-35 or even older 20-35. (all 2.8L)
There are also a couple of 3rd party ones that should be looked up.

But if you don't have a ff (or bigger crop body) then buy a lens for your current use. A decent lens won't loose much money should you go ff and even if you did have a ff compatible lens it would be a totally diffent lens on a ff body . Eg a 16-35 may be fine as a standard lens on a crop but it's an Ultra wide on a ff .
The very best standard fast zoom on a crop is the 17-55 which both fast and has IS (none of the fast ff zooms do) . Bought 2nd hand and looked after it would sell for close to what you bought it for at upgrade time ?

Lower priced best option is the Tamron 17-50 . 2 versions of this one has VC but is not quite as good optically as the non VC.
Or again if you don't mind the variable fstop sigma make a very good 17-70 2.8-4 HSM
