Shot a fundraiser the other night, usually my go to glass is the 28-70/70-200 f2.8 zooms.
Learned a long time ago to pack a fast prime just in case the light is extra bad....it was

Homie don't do flash so I was really pleased with the 'Fitty G' Hardly any misses, here's a few SOOC for your perusal.

great shots! looking at those numbers, lighting indeed was bad. that 1-stop sure made a difference!!

as my wife's coworker had a stroke and I put
up around 100 shots to a gallery so he could see who all came out in support. They raised over
$3K in about 2 hrs. Does yer heart good...especially around this time of year, eh?!

I love this! I battle with flash, too and I've always felt like I was half a 'tographer for it. I'm using this phrase from now on Will! If ever challenged, I'll tell them it works for the Trench Monkey - it works for me!

and chips & salsa on the house (the latter probably didn't hurt sales of the 22 oz'ers)

I usually point my flash straight backwards in situations like this. However, most of the time I take my 35/2 and shoot ambient. That extra stop can make a difference. Also it's small and easy to carry.

I had the opportunity to test the new 50 F1.8G indoors with contrasty pan lights. The good results, and no flare, made me sell my 50 F1.8D.

Flash is worth learning. In fact, any and all lighting is worth learning. It will do you no harm, and it may do you a great deal of good if you choose to use it. After all, any and all light is still just light, and the mastery of light is the essence of photography. Some people choose to use flash sometimes, some choose never, but the knowledge of how to do so successfully is still worth acquiring.

If I wanted an easy way to use flash in a case like this, I'd probably do what the wedding guys do... point the flash straight up with a diffuser on it, so that most of the light goes toward brightening up the overall light levels in the image (even 1/3 or 2/3 of a stop is sometimes a godsend) and a little bit goes toward the subject to reduce noise, fill in shadows, and add catchlights to the eyes.

I've been debating selling my D & getting the new G. My D is so sharp though that I hesitat to make the move.

In the center my 1.8D and 1.8G were about the same, but off center the G was way better at or near wide open.
The G has better flare/ghosting too.

Happy I made the switch. Now I just need to find a good home for my 1.8/D.
