Having both, I find I use the 70-200 most of the time! The Mk2 upgrade is truly spectacular, and the versatility of this lens is second to none. Having said this the 200 produces some of my absolute favourites... there is something magical about it. And I find I get less OOF with my 5D2 when object is moving and I have to track, and this is with f:2 VS F:2.8!
So if I have had the 70-200 Mk2 first I probably not got the 200, but at the time my Mk1 zoom was not close to what we see from the prime. Now it boils down to one stop aperture and some very seripus PP to see if it's worth it. Cannot bring myself to sell my 200... I'm not THAT short of cash
If you only can afford one lens, get the zoom. If you need the extra stop later on, the zoom is easy to sell... much harder to go the other route....Show more →
I couldn't agree more. I bought the 200/F2 first and love it. Then adding the 70-200 Mk2 I found I was using it more than the prime, but still use the prime as it has a quality I don't find in any other Canon lens I own. To WebDog's point though, the zoom is way easier to sell so I'd choose it first and then decide if you still want the prime.
