I am looking for a 13" or 17" wide carriage printer and it must excel with sepia toned B&W portraits. Suggestions or recommendations?

Epson 2200 with piezography ink set. Best B&W prints to 13" in width.

To some extent the quality of your print is determined by the quality of the paper you can afford.....a printer like the R3800 will give you a lot of options in this respect.

Having said that...prints from my Canon Pr9000 on Ilford Pearl are pretty good. It is difficult to get a neutral black from this printer...but you don't seem to want that anyway. Also, this is a dye printer...you might want the archival qualities of pigment ink.

If you get an Epson, don't forget to download Eric Chan's B&W profiles. I get excellent results using them on my Epson 3800. http://people.csail.mit.edu/ericchan/dp/Epson3880/abwprofiles.html
