Terrie, I'm glad you got at least a few helpful replies.
It may still be worth mentioning:
1.Attaching the flash will not necessarily raise the shutter speed. If you are in Av mode, no difference unless you have set a custom function for shutter speed with flash. In Tv or Manual, of course no difference. In Program mode there are situations where without flash it might choose a slow shutter speed because the aperture is already wide open, while with flash it will default to a ss of 1/60.
2. Shutter speeds faster than 1/200 will all sound the same because of how focal plane shutters work. With the sounds of that full-frame mirror, even high ss can sound slow compared to other cameras. I realize that this was not the issue in what you described, just a parenthetical observation.
Have fun with the 5D II, and +1 to the suggestion of picking up a 50/1.8 or other fast lens. No need to start with the most expensive varieties unless the cost is not a problem for you. ...Show more →
Thank you! This contains great information and I am making note of it! Appreciate the time you took, to help with this.

I did not understand your initial question. Because higher shutter speed does not increase the mirrors flip speed, as far as I know. I hear how slow it gets below 1/30th but can not hear any difference above 1/100th.
5D MK II is a great camera. I do not like the 50 1.8th feel (1.4 neither) but I owned both and they did great images. The 85 is an excellent choise imo, too.
