With the exception of Peters test shot those are some mighty fine photos and even though we could all set up Peter's target his is "bang on".
Well, if a lena is not in good AF calibration, then all else doesn't help much.
Found some flowers I did with handheld 1DMkIIN+ 500 f/4 wide open.
Some awesome images folks. I'm really enjoying them. It would be nice to see more samples from the Sigma 50-500 OS since those posted look VERY good & it's a lot cheaper than the Canon 500 L IS. I'm not expecting it to be on par but when I had the non OS version it was a very good performer.
Some truly amaing shots here - I rent the 500 for motorsport shots, but every time I hand it back, I wonder if I should buy it...still resisting....here are some of my fave shots with this beauty of a lens:

Cool, so its a double naught spy lens too The bad guys would never notice a lens like that on the opposite hill. Maybe the white color is to blend in with the snow.
Romy your link has some AWESOME images, even though they aren't birds. FANTASTIC. That said I think all the submissions so far are really great examples of what photography can be when done by those who know how to use their gear. Expensive gear makes it easier but it still needs to be told how to do it by a real photographer. Being able to buy the "good stuff" doesn't automatically make you a "great" photographer. Hopefully looking at these will drive me to try to improve my skill set somewhat.
I love wildlife shots (including birds, btw) which would be my emphasis when I get one of these lenses. However, I'm finding I'm really enjoying seeing the expressions of some the athletes concentration in the midst of their sport like Lars' windsurfer, or Cocodrillo's poll vaulter, or Romy's surfers (there are some great ones on his site). It takes long glass to get out in the water or field to capture this. Great stuff everyone, thanks!
