p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Olymous 12-50 Power Zoom Announced

From Dpreview:

Olympus has announced a weather-sealed 12-50mm F3.5-6.3 motor zoom lens with macro capabilities. The M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 12-50mm F3.5-6.3 EZ covers the 24-100mm equivalent range and is optimized for video capture. It offers multi-speed powered zooming with a manual zoom option. It also has an AF-hold button (marked as L-Fn) that suspends AF to avoid re-focusing on the wrong object. It is the first Micro Four Thirds lens to feature the same level of sealing as the company's high-end SHG lenses for Four Thirds DSLRs.

Good:
range, waether sealing, macro

Bad:
size, slow

As a photo guy I don't care for video features. Was kind of hoping it would be a fast zoom.

My guess is cause weather sealing and power zoom, as it has built-in motor for both zooming and AF, it cant be much small.

MTF doesnt look too good, and its way too slow.. rather get old 12-60 F2.8-4 and adapter, size will be similar, performace probably better and you will get more light (not sure how much it will be at 50mm settings, but as it ends at F4 it can be F3.5 at best or F3.8).

It's certainly bigger than what we've come to expect from Olympus, but given that it seems to be both internal focus and internal zoom, in use it may be smaller than lenses that expand. It certainly doesn't seem to be that heavy. I'm hearing specs of 57mm x 83mm and 211g.

Have you seen the Panasonic 14-42mm X lens?

f6.3 at 50mm, give me a break! - amaterus driving the market with no concept of the relationship between f-stop & shutter speed. Next it will be f8 like those old mirror lenses.

Reading the responses over at DP Review looks like all the clever sarcastic remarks have already been made.......although they seem to repeat themselves with every new piece of gear no matter where it is from. So I will refrain from negativity.

The lens looks ok to me. Not very fast, but the 12 and 25 primes have that ground covered if you need it. The wide end interest me, but I will wait to see the price of the upcoming Panasonic 12-35 before commitng to either.

I am not sure why so many people gripe with every announcement, I guess it is an option to cabin.-fever.

If it was optically very good I'd consider it as I shoot landscape at 6.3 usually anyway and so slow is no problem. The MTF compared to there rather lame 14-42 isn't impressive at all though. But there is much more to a lens than a calculated MTF.

Anyway, I doubt it will replace my 14-45 which is amazingly good for its size and weight (and has OIS). I carry a 7-14 and 45-175 so I don't need the slightly increased range.

For those wanting fast quality zooms it looks like you'll have to wait to see what the Panasonic 12-35 and 35-100 bring to the table.

Where is the MTF data? The new Panny 14-42 G X Vario PZ is amazingly tiny though the optical performance is about the same as the old version on some reviews.
Wonder what the IQ will be like with the new Oly.

Do "pro's" or "enthusiast" or whatever you must refer to yourself as exclusively shoot wide open

Given its a useful range and weather sealed it could be a nice zoom for those shooting landscapes.

Why does a 50mm need to be fast ?? Just because someone stops down and shoots a landscape, with a tripod, they don't understand the relationship of shutter speed to f-stop ??

There already is a great 12mm f2.0, 25mm f1.4 and 45mm f1.8 for those who need speed

millsart it's not so much need for speed, but optimal aperture, which is typically about 2 or 3 stops down from wide open, thats where I like to shoot if I can.

So using that zoom at 50mm, it's already at f6.3 wide open, stopping down to optimal aperture 2 or 3 stops means you have to shoot this lens at f11 or f16! With my Olympus 45mm stopped down to f4 of f5.6 it's already at optimal aperture while this zoom at f6.3 is still wide open rendering a lot poorer performance for landscapes, etc.

Hopefully Panasonic comes out with a fast zoom in this focal range as it would be great not to have to change lenses in the field especially when in cold or dusty environments that I sometimes find myself in.

Typically with variable aperture zooms I've found they need be stopped down less at the long end. At least for the Panasonic zooms I have (7-14, 14-45, 45-200) there isn't a single one with an optimal aperture past 6.3 at any focal length and it is pretty much impossible to have a optimal aperture past 7.1 or 8 on m43 as diffraction is already limiting the worst lenses available past that point on the 2x crop factor. Never stop a m43 lens down past f/8 unless you do it for DoF and can't focus stack instead.

Like you say though, 6.3 is very slow for 50 and unless it is close to perfect wide open there it isn't very useful.

On the Olympus site. Someone posted the 14-42 and 12-50 curves together on DPR for easy viewing:

There couldn't be a bigger hint that a weather sealed mirrorless is coming from Olympus.
