Hello!

My friend wants to purchase his first dSLR this Christmas and has a budget of $700-1k. His goal is to take pictures of his family and his newborn. Having said that, I recommended the d5100 with kit lens for $800.

Would you recommend something different? If it was for me, I'd personally recommend an older body, a quality used third party zoom, and a flash.

there are many ways to slice this pie, and your first instinct is probably the one to go on. it's right in his budget zone, and he can even add a 35/1.8G (for low light work) and be right at $1K.

if it's his first dslr, he might also be very happy with a D3100 + kit + 35/1.8G.

cheers

Thanks for the feedback. How much does a 35mm f/1.8 run? I'm not familiar with Nikon but do like the 50mm focal distance.

Another option would be the d3100+kit+flash since he plans on taking pictures of his baby. I simply recommended the d5100 since it has an articulating screen which may come in handy for shots of babies.

D5100 + kit lens + either 35/1.8 or 50/1.8 its a dream starting package in photography.

Being that he has a new born, I would definitely go for the 5100 since the video is better than the 3100. Believe me, he'll be doing a LOT of video!

I would only add a flash as well. For what he will be shooting the flash will be invaluable. I would forgo the kit lens if something needed to go to make room for the flash in his budget. Even the little SB400 can bounce I believe.....

Yeah. A D3100 kit + 55-200vr + 35 1.8 should be possible at $1000 or less.
