when you aim the camera down, you see the tripod legs. it is basically taking a bunch of shots in all direction (full circle maybe 8-12 shots from aiming camera straight foward, another 8-12 pointed towards sky full circle, and another 8-12 shots pointed downward angle at ground full circle.) and stitching them up. so equipment:

I remember I saw this kind of setup before but did not pay attention much. Until now I want to do it and cannot find the information. I think there is some special adapter that you mount on the tripod. Hopefully to hear from someone in this forum has done this kind of works before.

You can do the 360-degree pans by hand using a regular tripod head (a pan-tilt head will be more accurate than a ball head, IMO), but there are robotic heads that make it automatic.
You'll need to use special software for stitching such as PTGui, Autopano Pro, or Hugin. Some people use additional software such as Pano2VR or krpano to output either HTML5 and/or Flash files.

Have a Gigapan, it is very easy to use and put together the pano shots. Definately expensive but if you do a lot of them it will save you a lot of time.
