p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · got my first piece of pro glass!

I recently bought a Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 II HSM for my Nikon D90 but quickly returned it due to the lack of OS/VR (something I thought I could live without.) While I was shopping around for a 70-200mm f/2.8, I found a lot of posts online that said the 'Sigma was great, for what it was' and posts that said something along the lines of 'you will think its fine until you've used pro glass.' I honestly though the IQ of the Sigma was fine and I couldn't image how much better the Nikkor 70-200mm could possibly be. After returning the Sigma I decided to bite the bullet and invest in a used Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VRI, which came in earlier today.. and I was blown away! The images I took today at a BBQ we had on the Nikon were soooooo CRISP! I now know why this is considered pro glass. Other than the squeak it makes on either side of the focus range when using the focus ring (which from my understanding so far is a common issue) this lens is amazing. Now I've got to start saving my lunch money to upgrade my 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5 to either the 17-55mm f/2.8 or 24-70mm f2.8 Nikons

It's the glass that's the most important part of the system. Any camera body can record an image but it's the glass that makes it crisp.

Glass makes the camera. I'd love to have a 70-200 or even an older 80-200.

I think the 80-200's are pretty much the best deal going - around half the cost of the VRI and amazing quality and sharpness. I love my 80-200 ED, and if I ever decide to upgrade to the VR I, it will still be worth most of what I paid for it.

Love my 70-200 vr1....little side note, i used to think that there was no such thing as a "sharp" fisheye.....i used to have the 8mm f/3.5 rokinon/samyang....it was decent at f/5.6, but not really GREAT till f/11, and even then it wasn't awesome....

then i bought a tokina 10-17, only b/c my 8mm wouldn't fit inside a housing....at f/5.6 it was decently sharp, but again, not great till f/11....

Then, i started having trouble with the AF adjust settings with that tokina, so i bought a 10.5mm nikon....SHARPEST LENS I OWN....at 2.8 it cuts like a razor, and never gets ANY sharper up to f/11.....i was so blown away....

so moral of the story, it's not just PRO glass that makes a difference, but NIKON glass, that makes a difference too...

Congrats and condolences. It's a slippery slope from here out, and your toys will be much more expensive.

I agree, we need pics for proof.

I'd take the 17-55 every time, every day, and twice on Sunday. I've never liked the 24-70 as much as the 17-55. Plus, the 17-55 has a slightly wider range and a much better fit for DX. The difference between 55 and 70 is not a big deal, but the difference between 17 and 24 is huge. Built like a tank, focuses instantly, lighter, smaller, and cheaper. What's not to love?

I've definetly set my sights on the 17-55mm, my lens in that range right now is the 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5 but I wanted something a little faster. I was planning on making my set up consist of the 70-200, the 17-55, and fill in the gap with the 60mm macro lens. I figure those 3 lenses will allow me to do everything I want to do.

To be fair, there are some third party stuff that is as good or better. For example, the Tamron 17-50 2.8 is just as good as the Nikon 17-55. I owned the Nikon but have shot with both, no difference, except the Nikon is built better. [shock]

24-70 is a good lens as is the 14-24. I used the 14-24 quite a bit on a D300 before I moved to a D3s tho in that same range the Tokina 11-16 2.8 is also stellar and much cheaper.

It's a case by case basis so read the reviews and ask the forum, there are definately gems out there in Sigma/Tamron/Tokina land. Generally they are primes but some of the zooms are decent too.

I own and love the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8, but I think the difference between the that and the Nikon equivalent shows up on my D90 in low light. I think it is more a failing of the AF on the D90 than the glass itself, but my guess is the Nikon 24-70 or 28-70 would do better since it has the benefit of full microcode access(body and lens)/customization/testing/etc.

I doubt the difference shows up on anything above a D300/D700, and especially your D3s with the low-light capability it has...

I felt the same way when I got my 80-200mm 2.8. The colors and contrast were just amazing compared to what I was used to. This is the point where your wallet starts to quake with fear. :3

Mine was night and day. Beyond the usual contrast and sharpness improvements (especially at 2.8), the Nikon's colors perfectly matched the 80-200. The Tamron had a nasty color cast to it, particularly noticeable on sunny days with lots of sky and green grass. Just pushed everything towards the blue/green side, and was hard/impossible on some pics to correct. If I get a chance during Xmas break, I'm going to do a comparison between the two, since some people don't seem to notice these issues.
