p.1 #1 · Christmas Buy: What macro lens to get?

I want to get a new macro lens, I've got an older (in meh) shape 60 AF-D and I'm thinking it's time to get something new.

So what should I get?

My macro shooting is almost all nature & products (Don't like bugs, spray enough bug killer around the house to give me cancer)

Thanks,

Tim

Pick a nice affordable one and a flash kit.

I didn't know Tamron makes a 150mm Macro, are you sure you are not talking about the Sigma 150mm?

what is the 60 NOT doing for you?

The Siggy 150 is one of the best but if you are not needing the longer WD for bugs??

No gear listed in profile so a very good tripod and head and speedlights before a new lens. Remote release would be great also

1. Pick focal length.

2. Decide on required features (motor in lens, USM, front element extension, rotation, etc.)

3. Use roll of the dice to decide between remaining options.

Hi Tim

I picked up the new Nikon 40mm Micro recently. For me it fits the bill perfectly. I use it on a D7000. The images ase sharp wide open with nice contrast. It is versatile for use as a normal walk-around and great for occasional close-up work. It would tough to do bugs, but for moderate closeups and documentation subjects it rocks. The price point is very reasonable too. It is light and small, easy to stuff in your bag or a spare pocket.

What is the 60 AF-D not doing for you?

I have the 60 AF-S, 105VR, and the Tamron 60 f/2.

In the right conditions (read: daylight), the 60 AF-S is the best lens I have used... ever. But in other condions (lower light) the 105VR and the Tamron 60 f/2 are awesome. If you don't shoot bugs, the longer focal lengths don't matter as much.

Nikon also makes a 200mm F4 model that's useful for shy insects if that's what you're into shooting, but a flash is indespensable whatever you get.

Let's make it confusing. Zeiss 100mm f/2 Makro Planar. $1800 or so.

Thanks for all the replies so far.

Little Info:

Body: D7000
Shooting: Mostly flowers and products (no bugs)
What's wrong with 60 AF-D: Honestly, nothing, but it's loud and it's only 60mm so thinking 105/150 for range/portrait co-use or 40 for noise/cost.

For flowers and such, working distance still matters for lighting and perspective / background control, though I don't think you need to get into the really long macros where the price jumps substantially. Any of the macros / micros around 105 would work better than the 60, maybe the 150's if price is not too big of a deterrent.
