IMHO even the older 24/2.8 AI-S is better than the D prime, despite the claim of some that the two shares the same optical formula. Sigma 24/1.8 stopped down at f2.8 is better than D prime but still far from 24-70/2.8. If you look for a good inexpensive prime in this area 28/2 AI-S or 28/2.8 AI-S (later version with CRC) are very good performers. Dec 05, 2011 at 06:29 PM

The reason for this question is that I currently have the 24mm f/2.8 AF (non-D) and a Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 non-BIM and I'm thinking of getting the 24-70. I know you didn't mention it, but in terms of focusing performance, the 24-70 kicks the crap out of any AF-D lens. It's scary how quickly and accurately my 24-70 focuses in near dark situations! Taken with the AFS 24-70mm and the D3x @ 24mm. Was a bit dark, 25 sec exposure Full D3x image (6048x4032 resolution, ca. 9 MB) Your question is for 24mm. Just for completeness. @62mm, 6 sec exposure Full D3x resolution (ca. 12 MB) The biggest deficiency of the AFS 24-70mm/2.8 is that it does not raise emotions like the 14-24mm or the 70-200mm VR II. I've owned both at the same time, shooting with D700. 27-70 is almost perfect... sharp, almost no CA, deep colors... about the only negative things about it are price and weight. The 24/2.8 AFD is sharp and small, and that's about it. My biggest complaint about it is that it FLARES easily. This is one of the few Nikon lenses that I would not recommend. If you need this focal length on a prime, I suggest just jumping ahead to the 35/2, which is a way better glass, IME. Dec 05, 2011 at 08:37 PM

It's a good lens but not a great lens. Definately one of my biggest workhorses for general use much like the 70-200. Thing is, the 24 1.4 and 14-24 @ 24 both shot at f/2.8 are better than the 24-70 @ 24 f/2.8. That said, I wouldn't leave it out of my bag. It's my favorite walk-around FX lens for general use. I do wish it would get updated with VR but that's a minor gripe. Dec 05, 2011 at 09:15 PM

I bought the prime from CL for a great price and I needed something wide. Looks like the 24-70 is in my future. The Tammy is a good lens but for fast-paced, low-light, weddings it's AF is not up to the task and I don't feel that it is wide enough sometimes. -Ed Dec 05, 2011 at 09:22 PM

If the 24-70 had VR, it would be perfect. They are very capable work horses. Unfortunately, aside from its size and weight, there is nothing to recommend the 24/2.8 or the 20, for that matter. Ya I think the last update came out about when the D3 did [or at same time] so its due but most likely won't see that update for awhile since it has nano already. To be fair, Canon's 24-70L doesn't have IS so maybe there is some optic formula hinderance or something significantly above my pay grade as to why they can't just add it. One can still hope tho.
