p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · G10 vs.......????

I was relatively tempted by the new Fuji 10X yesterday......it felt nice to handle and I'm even tempted to go back with a memory card and try it seriously....but:

It is £500 for starters; and I have a G10.

The G10 fits in my pockets and for my needs ( a casual take anywhere camera for landscape / street photography) it seems to do quite well. I nearly always convert RAW files to B+W and 'add' grain to try for a FP4 or HP5 type of look. The images don't match the B+W pics I have taken with those films.....but are nice enough......even at ISO 400. I get very nice A3 prints.

So the Fuji is expensive and doesn't fit my pockets so well.....but I was wondering if there is something out there I am missing. I have discounted the G12; I don't see it as a valid upgrade to the G10. Fitting my pocket is a must.....if I have to carry a bag then I will take a DSLR with me.

The main downside with the G10 is I would like a wider lens...although when I do need to go wider, PS makes a good job of stitching. I also like the viewfinder.....a bit rubbish obviously compared with a DSLR...but a lot better than nothing and valuable at times.

Well, I'm in your same boat, more or less.

I like an optical viewfinder -- holding to face for framing and steadiness is just second nature.

But I recently purchased a S95 refurb at a great price to be that true pocket camera. I already have an older G6 (only goes to 35mm equiv.), so know what you mean.

Otherwise, for wider angle, get the new S100 that goes to the equiv. of 24mm.

I've made my choice: Small P&S sensor for kick-around, and large 1D-series for more "serious" images.

Good luck deciding.

To me, the G10 falls into a "no-mans land". The images aren't significantly better than the phone I'm already carrying. I do have a 1DsIII and 1DIV that take awesome pictures, but are too big/heavy to carry around all the time. I settled on a T2i/Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 for my lightweight camera, my droid phone as my P&S, and my 1D bodies for when I'm serious. The T2i/Tamron takes really nice photos, I can use all my Canon lenses with it if I want, takes nice video, and it's pretty small and light. But obviously can't fit into a pocket. Just another option to consider.

btw, I did have a G10 that I sold after not being completely satisfied with the results. Great images when the light is right, but slow and high ISO was pretty bad.

That pretty much sums up the G10. Fortunately for me, well lit situations are where I use it most frequently, for hiking, backpacking or travel with or without an SLR. I like that it has great minimum focus distance, can take a polarizer filter, and has a reasonably compact underwater housing. 28-140 mm equivalent range and the IQ is as good if not better than an equivalent range consumer zoom. Its ISO limitations are directly related to its pixel density and I find it good training for working with the 7D's pixel density which is the next step up the continuum to the 5D. Its a useful tool that has a permanent place in my kit.

I'd say a m4/3 + pancake for almost pocketability (cargo pants), but high IQ. Fuji X10 looks very nice, but price is absurd compared to the m/43 and APS-C EVIL cameras. Sony NEX-5N looks good, but lenses can still be big. Cameras like the Panasonic LX-5, Oly XZ-1, Samsung T500 are in the same class as the Fuji and cheaper.

Fuji has best IQ, but none of them would be used above ISO 400 and even then noise is readily apparent. The G10 shows some noise at base ISO and you wouldn't use more than ISO 200 IMO except for smaller prints. The m4/3 and APS_C EVIL's are usable to ISO 1600/3200.

As we speak (so to speak) I am printing A3 images from a recent trip out with my G10. Apart from the fact they all have (in my mind) the digital 'look', it is hard to fault them.

The bottom line is still this: the G10 fits in my pocket and I take it with me without a second thought....so still looking for a much better performer that is equally portable.

Just to comment on an above post...any mobile phone that has the same IQ as the G10 lens is something special...please give details so we can all get one.

One of the pics I did with the G10 is a fairly wide shot of a decayed park bench. I zoomed in on something that caught my attention when looking on my (27in) monitor...it was a coin on the ground. i could see that it was particular coin (a 2p ) . On the A3 print I did later I could still see it.....on the A3 print it was about 2mm in diameter. Work out that level of pixel resolution...amazing!

The G11 is not bad

Straight out of the camera. Obviously there is noise but for a small sensor not too bad.

Indeed, looks very nice! I really like my S95 (have had it a year now). During this time I have tried various other smaller cameras, such as Olympus E-PL2 and currently a Leica X1 that I got for a very good price, but I always seem to return to the S95. It's just so convenient and the image quality is very good considering its size. Maybe I don't really need anything else than S95 for the rare times when I can't bring the 5D.

Anthony, based on my own experiences I would recommend that you stick with your G10 a while longer since you seem to enjoy it.

The S95 and S100 are nicely sized, but their lenses are very slow and loaded with aberrations. Don't be fooled: the lens quality in these cameras is a far cry from that of the larger cameras like the G10-G12 and even the LX3. Of course the size difference is also significant.

You say the main downside of the G10 is that its lens isn't wide enough, and indeed there's a lot to be said for having a 24 mm-equivalent lens in a snapshot camera. Here are some of my LX3 pics, many of which were shot at 24 mm-e (and f/2 and ISO 800 too!).

http://img36.imageshack.us/img36/9669/lx3toureiffel.jpg

I also use this camera to shoot less obvious photos for my various ongoing projects, many of which take advantage of the 24 mm-e lens.

If you want a wider lens than the G10, there's not much point in getting an X10. Get an LX5 or S100, or put up with the 28 mm-e lens and stick with the G10.

Some of the images on here clearly demonstrate just how good P+S cameras have become...it would have been great to see what Ansel Adams could have achieved with one....

Very nice, Specularist. Thanks for the interesting, vivid shots.

Wow, talk about bowing to peer pressure. . .

. . . I'm waiting for delivery of a used G10 that I just bought on eBay! For $118, I couldn't pass it up. Supposed to get here in a couple days.

Much as I love larger format 1D-series bodies and interchangeable lenses, there is a lot to be said for the carefree attitude of a P&S. The interchangeable lens M4/3 and Nex are a bit unwieldy compared to something that can fit in a pocket. The G-series is about as big as I figure is practical as a pocket camera with decent IQ.

I'll probably give my G6 to a daughter as a bonus gift over the holidays.

My s95 just got here, and the battery is charging and some tests to make sure it's functioning will be done - At which point it will go back in the box while i decide what to do with it :/

I took a quick poke round, it's a PAS but i reserve judgment until I see what comes out of it.

hooligan -- I took a hundreds of jpgs last week with my wife's new/refurb S95 ($259 from Adorama at that time), and have to say how nice the shots turned out. That helped push me to a better version of the G-series for myself.

There is a lot to be said for the sense of freedom when you can take decent photos with a cheap, highly portable camera! Really exhilarating! No worries, like when you have $4000 swinging around your neck!

Looking forward to your thoughts and pictures.

Love love love my Oly EPM1. Tiny, lens flexibility, great small primes. Puts a lot of fun back into things. Not quite a true pocketable, but in the G10 class. It gets a lot of stick for not being quite as good as a full size DSLR, but that's not what it's about for me. It's a great, great compact camera that's almost as good as a DSLR and good for most of the things I want to do.

But.... maybe not quite pocketable unless you're wearing a jacket, though not far off with the panny 14mm on.

I had a G9 and liked it, just felt limited by the 35mm.
I was tempted by the LX5 with its 16:9 and 24mm , but never got one.
I fell in love with the look of the X100, but was put off by the price tag and fixed 35. When the X10 came out, I gave it a shot. It was more cash than I wanted to pay, but the features were what I wanted in a pocket cam. The manual zoom alone would make me choose it over anything else. IQ is very good and the EXR mode does a very good job when needed.

I think the issue comes down to portability. How important is it? If the size of the G10 works then it's probably the way to go in terms of an advanced P&S. However, as many have pointed out here a truly portable P&S is really advantageous. I haven not had any of the G series cameras, but I did have an early Sony P&S that was about the size of the G. Wonderful little camera, but it had that additional bulk that rendered it optional when out and about. So, while it was still very easy to tote around, it didn't slip into a jacket pocket or purse without consideration. Fast forward....bought the wife the S95 last Christmas and it is always with us. It lives in her purse unless I steal it for the day. We capture a lot of pictures that we would not otherwise get because of its compact size, granted they are mostly snapshots.

Here is an improbable comparison:
Hasselblad Vs Canon G10

http://luminous-landscape.com/reviews/kidding.shtml

Well there is some validity in comparing a iPhone G4s camera to a dSLR, in terms of always having a camera in your pocket. And I anticipate that the cameras in phones will improve much faster over the next several years than dSLRs. However I am not giving up my 5DII and Zeiss lenses for an i phone, yet!

Perhaps the next Luminous Landscape will have the iPhone G4s Vs the Sony Nex7.

Okay, I'm jazzed and officially on board!

Mine came today, and far surpasses the physical condition shown in the photos fro the auction.

I'll admit, the IQ and details are not as good as a DSLR. I'm sure the APS-C Nex beats it, and most M4/3 too.

But for compact size and features, this is an awesome machine and smaller than any of those above. I'm still getting used to it, but it is a huge upgrade from my G6, in function and controls, as well as over doubling the resolution.

Here are some from my first foray today. PP in LR 3.6 from RAW.

Sometimes it a lot of fun to just free yourself from the heavy gear that you normally shoot, and work within the limitations of a smaller sensor, but also smaller, more convenient camera. A few from a business trip I took last year (G11):
