I've never seen a price on a 300mm f2 Nikkor, well a price on one that wasn't converted to a cine mount. I saw a cine mount 300mm f2 BIN on ebay a couple years ago for $5,000 with no trunk & no dedicated TC. I thought about the $5,000 altered mount lens offer, then looked an hour later & it was sold.
Anyone know what the going price on 300 f2 with its dedicated TC and trunk goes for currently?
BH had one a few years ago w/o the dedicated TC it was $10,000.
But alas seeing Greg's shots inspired me to goto the last day of the Penguin Plunge Preview for season pass holders at the Calgary Zoo (2nd time this week I went) but this time I took along the 200 1.8. Tommorow the general public will have access and it will be packed like Penguin Food(sardines)
Thanks Burningheart. Thanks for the heads up. I wouldnt mind going to the zoo and see those penguins this weekend. PM if you want want me to buy you a coffee.
I am actually thinking of selling my 200 1.8 EF L and my 400 2.8 EF L or at least trading it for some leica gear. I have a long term wrist injury that has made using these telephoto quite painfull.
Feel free to P.M if you have a solution to ease my pain
Gregory, it's bewildered me through your last several posts what keeps me interested in your style of photography!!! I still can't place a finger on it, and have to just say "I really like it!!!". Sometimes it really is that simple..."I just really like it!!!"

The lighting and overall "mood" of each tells a very unique story!!! Thanks!
I have been thinking days and days if I should reply to this, and I really don't mean this in a bad way, but I can't for the life of me figure out what differs these pics from similar shot with a f.ex. 85 f1.8... I don't want to rain on anyones parade, but for me, personally, artistically, they are mere snapshops of everyday subjects... I can not see how these pictures would have been different with a 85 f1.8... sorry...

Thanks Reno, It makes me happy that my work has inspired you . The 200 1.8 EF L has really helped me find my way back to street shooting.
Rune,
I am not familiur with the 85 1.8 so I am unable to commment on your statement that my "snap shots" could have been taking with that lens.
I am not sure if your familar with the compression and limited depth of feild that a lens like the 200 1.8 EF affords over a shorter focal length. The extra mm helps to fill the frame , or give a greater working distance that gives more compression.
And to you point about being able to take these shots with a 85 mm Hmm . In many cases I am sure your right. And really they could have been taken with any lens but the shots would be differnt.
The fact is the combination of focal length, fast aperature and sharpness makes the 200 1.8 EF L special. But in the end it's the user that is the most important link in the image chain.

Because of cronic wrist injury I am going to be sell/trading my 200 1.8 EF in and my 5D2. Looking to get back to into some Leica gear if anyone knows, or has.
I am going to post a add on the FM forum but thought I would give those who have been following this thread the first crack at it .
I hope you all enjoyed the shots in this thread
This is going to be one of the last post in this thread, at least by me.

Gregory, the signature of this lens is really sick.. it has its own look just like 50L1.0 and 85L1.2. Sorry about your wrist injury, i really love most of your shots in this thread.

I know everything about photography is subjective and having said that.....looking at all these photos taken with 200 1.8 I fail to see what mmtran is saying about the 'own look' of this lens.
Furthermore, most of them seem ordinary snapshots which could have been easily achieved with 135L, 70-200 etc....
I fail to see the 'feel' / 'look' of 1.8 @ 200mm, except a very few....
I don't want to offend somebody, but there's a thing called 'freedom of speech' and i'm just saying....what i'm thinking...
Why take an extraordinary lens and take ordinary pictures? Why all the hype around some pictures JUST because they were SHOT with a 200 1.8 ?
On the other hand, sorry for the injury Gregory and I hope you didn't take my post the wrong way......

Thanks to everyone for for taking the time to check out this thread.
Adrain, your entitled to your opinion.I guess your not a fan of my work. Funny thing is I did a search and from what I saw we seem to have a simular style of shooting and subject matter.
Perhaps you can enlightening me to why mine are just snap shots? And as far being able to shoot them with the 135 2.0 and the 70-200 is that your opinion because that is the gear your using.? Look from what I have seen I really like your work. And if your taking a run at me to justify that you wouldnt benifit from using a big heavy and rare expensive lens like the 200 1.8 EF than all the power to you.
Having a hard time seeing where you are coming from.
The fact is the combination of aperature and focal length gives the 200 1.8 EF L combined with it's special glass (not made anymore) it's own uniique signature.
I cant help thinkig you got a little bit of lens envey going on.
I don't want to get into a pissing contest. But so where clear. Mine is bigger tounge in cheek. ( I really dont care)
As long as your happy and disappointed in my work. Im good
At any rate, the last couple of days I have been mostly in front of the camera and not behind it. As we doing some instructional video's. The video from the the 200 1.8 EF L looks awsome.
It's given my wrist a chance to heal. It's funny swinging a sword/stick and knife donst hurt the wrist, but holding the 200 1.8 EF L and 5d2 at a certain angle sends, what I can only discribe as "a knife in the wirst feeling".
And up to this point even that didnt stop me from wanting to use it ..
Just got a couple of snap shots to keep the thread going.

Thanks Andy,
It was awsome to hear that my work has inspired you to get and shoot. I never understood why you have to got exotic places to take interesting photo's.
I was kind of hoping that Adrain would respond back. I really do repect his right to state his opinion and I thought I also made some valid points . I wasnt looking for drama , I just thought it might make for some interesting discussion.
I was teaching a lot this weekend and diidnt have much time to shoot. But I was able to take a couple decent shots with the 200 1. EF L . And I got one take from my son which I can use in my project. Thanks Boy.
He framed it himself suggested the pose( he is also a Martial Artist) and focused it himself in Live View .
