this is to those who use a APSH (1D3 or 1D4) body together with a 24L version II. what is your experience. good combination? corner softness at smaller apertures sufficiently eliminated because of sensor size ?

i really love my 50L on APSH. sold the 35L due to focussing issues.
the 24 will give 30mm FOV. its not a classical 35mm on FF.
bokeh should be a tad nervous, but i expect
- a versatile event combination
- good performance for night shots
- excellent 30mm for landscapes

what is your experience ?
any comments are welcome.

I use the 24 f1.4 II on 1Ds2 and 1D2n. I strongly prefer using it on full frame because of the FL and the quality of the optics. However when using it on the 1.3x it still works wonders. If you're bothered with the vignetting between 1.4-1.8 you'll see that on APS-H this will be quite a bit les than on full frame.

The 24f1.4 II is phenomenal piece of glass and imho no other lens comes close to the look it can provide. It's great for low light and close quarters, but if your main purpose would be to use it for landscapes (f8 > ) there probably are (cheaper) alternatives.

thanks for the reply. i'd principally like to use it for the wider apertures, including wide open.
i dont exclude a FF body one day, but for the moment i concentrate on my 2 apsh bodies (iq !).

awesome combo. when i shoot weddings w/ my 1d IV, this lens is on there about 50% of the time. that is a lot considering how many lenses i use.

I love the 24II on the 1D4. The effective 31mm perspctive is a very natural one to me indoors and out. It's useful for anything you might want a 28mm or 35mm lens for with a full frame camera.

my 35L worked perfectely on the 30D and 50D, but not on the 1D3.
problem: focus accuracy at wider apertures and close distance.
as i said: this problem did not exist on those apsc-cameras.
studied the case, found some technical explanations and concluded that it's not a perfect combo.
dont ask me for details please.
i suppose that the new 24L is focussing perfectely on my 1D's.

Forgive me, but I find it hard to believe that the (at the time) top dog in af speed is bested by xxd cameras, unless you had an issue with the 1d3.

I just got my copy of the 24L thanks to the instant rebate program. I will be using this mostly on a 5D II but I fail to understand why the lens would not work just as well on an APSH body. I mean, the 24L is soft at the corners/edges, especially at the wider apertures ... so I would think it should work even better on an APSH/APSC bodies than on a FF body. No?

I've owned quite a few 35L's. What I have found is they generally focus very accurately on the 5D's and 1DS's. On my 1DIV, the 35Ls are OK but the accuracy wide open is not as good as on the other bodies. I have tried this on multiple 35's and they all behave the same. It's not bad actually - it's just that the number of accurate hits is not as good as on the other bodies. I have sent the 35 with my 1DIV in and it came back behaving the same way (within specs). I have read that the 35 just has an older AF and may just need to updated to the newer 1D bodies - I don't know.

I also have the 24L and on my 1DIV, I would say the AF wide open is a little bit better than the 35L on it. It has almost a 35mm feel to it (FF) but it "seems" to my eye that the DOF is not as shallow as the 35mm on a FF. Other than that, it is an excellent combo for "getting in there" kind of shots.

you are forgiven

i was not satisfied with the AF consistency close and at wide apertures, means: principally for portraits. dont ask me for details, but the behaviour was like that: inconsistent. i tested and observed it enough. compared to the 30D and 50D the AF accuracy at the described conditions was not satisfying. not consistent. please note: i mentioned the 1D3. i sold the 35L before getting the 1D4.
BTW: I bought the 50L for the 35L and i am much more happy with it for closeup portraits ( < f2.5) on the 1D3 (and of course on the 1D4). cannot tell you if it could have been a callibration problem between 1D3 and 35L. i could have checked that out, but at that time i did not thought about it.
the AF of the 1D3 had been callibrated by routine when i still owned the 35. it didnt change anything: the AF was as good as before. - before and afterwards i had no problems with my lenses, nor for servo bursts, nor for critical wide open stuff, except the 35L (and at a certain degree with my 200L f2.8 wide open).

thanks for your reply. yes, i am counting on that effect (relatively good corners).
wide open it is less important and i wonder how the bokeh will look like wide open...

I had the same problem with the 35L working on 1D3. Sold it and bought the 24LII.
Now I bought the 35L back and tried it on my 1D4. Works ok but not as good as it does on my 5D2. I even sent the body and lens in to get calibrated together....

shot my first wedding 10 days ago. the best pics indoors came from the 50L.
using the 2470 at the wider end, i really missed something like a 24L.
starting to make my decision...

I have been shooting the last 2 years with the 24,50,85 combo and love it.
Bought the 35 back this year and hardly have used it. The 50L never comes off my 5D2.
Will prob sell the 35L and wait for a version II of it.....someday..maybe lol

i dont exclude its usage on FF one day, but looking for it principally for APSH.
i think the vignetting is correctable on dpp.
what interests me more, is the bokeh appearance on APSH below f2.8

I'm using it a lot indoors with the mkIV these days, but most of the time flash assisted (bounced from the ceiling), below ISO 640 (since I'm not so impressed with the high-iso performance of the mkIV, as e.g. compared to my good ol' 5DmkII).
