Light output is low compared to ring flash. Also on shiny objects may create catchlights from each LED.

Ring light is great for flat lit documentary photographs. The first ring flashes were designed for dental and medical applications like that. But it's not the most natural light. Natural light comes from a downward angle most of the time...

I just leveraged what I know from shooting for years with dual flash to macro. Flea or Elephant the same factors will create the illusion of natural 3D shape. So if you already have a hot shoe flash all you need is some mat board and a bit of imagination...

Directional light reveals shape and texture, but sometimes you need to augment that with shadowless fill light to reduce contrast.

Up close, a ring light can work well for this, and good LED ring lights can give a "what-you-see-is-what-you-get" view during set up.
