Picked this lens up on Tuesday and took it with me on a shoot for deer. This young whitetail buck walked out of the woods right next to road. Too close for 300 2.8 with 1.4 so I grabbed the 70-300 vr. Shot at about 180mm. Really likeing this lens.

nice shot. This lens is a killer value, one of my favorites. Love it on the D700, pretty good on the crop body too.

I haven't had much luck with this lens lately. Here is a similar deer shot, at 1/500s, f/5.6, 300mm:

I've had a few good shots, but I feel like I get better results with my 18-200mm.

@ OccAeon

Definitely looks like a focus issue or a bad copy. Hard to tell if the focus is somewhere else from the size of the image posted.

The lens is way better that what the photo with the 2 deer is showing. Almost looks like it focused on the 2 trees behind the deer.

kentvinyard:

Nice one, beautiful little whitetail. Love the colours of the background. Can't beat that lens for overall versatility out in the natural world.

OccAeon:

I'm not sure truly what is going on with your pics. I'd certainly try some controlled testing to see what the problem is though - that lens should do noticeably better than what you're getting.

I haven't had my 70-300 VR out for a few months but played with it a little today. Hard not to like this lens

Looks like you did not let the VR settle before the picture was taken.

My copy needed a significant fine focus adjustment before the results were optimal.

I used to have this lens ... found it sharper on my D700 than my D90 at the time. I ended up selling it when I got my 200-400 f/4 VR

Exactly what I've found so far - though the extra reach is nice on a crop body, my copy which is very sharp on the FF body isn't as sharp on the cropper. If I get bored enough inside one day this winter I'll do some focus testing with my bodies and lenses and see if I can make some improvements. Here's one at 200mm wide open on the D700

OccAeon, kind of looks like camera shake to me - I can't see any sharp points in that image. Test that puppy on a tripod and see what you get?

As everything is out of focus in this shot I'd say camera shake. I've seen and taken too many good shots with this lens to believe otherwise. As mentioned previously, you may have a bad copy or need a micro adjustment.

^ this AND w/o good long lens technique...1/500th is really pushing it for an effective 450mm non-static handheld capture.

I like this lens a lot too. Here is one I took on my old D80 (f/5.3@1/250) of my buddy. Its sharp with pretty good bokeh. I love using it!

Another, this at f/5.6@1/200:

To me it is one of those rare deals in lenses where it is affordable but performs like the expensive big boys. Mine is sharp from one end to the other even wide open.

This lens really is great. I'd use it, but unfortunately I neither have the time nor setting to take shots. It obviously isn't as good as the more expensive lenses, but it is definitely more than what you pay for. On a side note, I have a mint one for sale in the buy/sell forum if anyone needs one.

I started to post this last night, but I lost Fred somewhere, and couldn't find him.

The 70-300 is awesome value, and very sharp from 70-200, with 300 being good, relative to the much more expensive 200-400 or 300 2.8 VR. If you shoot studio or strobed situations, it's super versatile.

I love the lens to death. I have actually decided to sell mine though and go with the 70-200. I need something that performs better in low light. It is definitely a fantastic lens. One of the best bang-for-your-buck lenses out there.
