I have both, and really enjoy using the 135mm for event and studio portrait work - have to say, though, the II series closed the gap some - I always like shooting with primes if possible, and the extra f-stop is nice, but if I could only have one lens in the bag for this range it would be the 70-200 II, the versatility of the zoom is a must at times for me in the wide variety of shooting I do - that being said, you're going to love shooting with the 135mm, heck just get out there and fire away, the more you shoot with it the less anxiety you will have about lens choices!
I own both the 135L and 70-200 II. I appreciate the capabilities of the 70-200 II but primarily use it when shooting outdoor sports. Love the IQ of the 135 for candids without it being too intrusive. Advantages to both and I'm fortunate to be able to have both.

Holy Crap !!! Hes getting big !!! Was he playing his "I'm going to beat you senseless if you take another picture" imitation?
He's got some teeth coming in right now, so he is gritting his together pretty good. He mustn't be very comfortable, but he's playing it off really well right now. Just drolling and making sour faces.
He's "sort of" good around a camera. I don't get much time before I've got to stop. It's funny, I was shooting from a small distance away, and I was sort of out of view when I started snapping and the 1D shutter scared him lol.

Robert, nice shot, cute kid. His expression in that photo must be identical to yours when someone says they don't like the noise on the 7D...
Lol, maybe! I know you guys will find it hard to believe, but I try not to show any anger towards anything when I'm around my son. Only love.
Shooting events I would not be without my 70-200 2.8IS. I can get the shots I want without being in someone's face. Great for portraits as well (not to mention sports). The 135 is a great lens. I have had 3 or 4 but always got rid of them since they saw such little use. The 70-200 would be the last lens I would ever sell and that would only be to buy the II version of it.
I baught the 135L last week and after a photoshoot I realized that I needed 1/500 to get reletively sharp images and still it wasn't sharper than the 70-200 f4 IS that I had. With the 70-200 f4 IS I was able to shoot at 1/100 @170mm and get scary sharp images.
I placed an order for the 70-200 II and I think I will sell the 135L
