Hi, I saw that D started a thread touching on this topic. Below are some shots I've taken in recent weeks. The first six were taken handheld using the 100L and a 7D with the 430EX diffused with a Lumiquest softbox and some extra packing material. Very few keepers out of many shots-- trying to get a handle on this. Shots 7-9 were taken using the 180L/1.4TC and the 1DMIV with a tripod and the same lighting setup. The 100L is a lot more fun.
I read somewhere that most digital cameras perform best at even ISO stops, and that you can get more noise at 640 than at 800 (have not tested it myself though).

Thanks vm-- will have to test out that theory if I can find some good bugs. Even though it's a jungle out there, seems like there are less critters around these days...
Thanks guys. Michael-- I think the noise could be cleaned up a bit more in the last frame, but it is a lot better than in the original shots. I used Noiseware on these...
Thanks again. Never tried Noise Ninja-- was recommended on Noiseware someplace and used it free for a while before buying it. I tend to go for the easiest option that offers me limited hassle. Ninja may be better for all I know but have already bought Noiseware...
