p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Croatia with Leica & Zeiss

I recently spent a couple of weeks on vacation in Croatia and although I did surprisingly little photography, I did take some shots. I spent two weeks in Zagreb and one in Dubrovnik. While I was staying in Zagreb I did a bit of travelling out to the country side looking at old castles as well as visiting the Plitvice national park. So I'll post two sets here, Dubrovnik & Plitvice and perhaps a third one with assorted castles & ruins. I have yet to process more than a handful of images so I'm not sure yet.

Anyway, I'll start with Dubrovnik.

In terms of gear, I had the M9 with assorted lenses and a NEX-C3 as backup. Although I had an incident with the Leica (I dropped it on concrete), it survived and I didn't have to use the NEX. This was the first time I took a trip without a DSLR and it worked quite well. It's very nice to have a compact kit. My only complaint is that the M9 isn't very good for tripod based night shots, but apart from that it worked admirably.

Nice photos. It would have been nice to meet you in Zagreb. Perhaps next time.
What kind of tripod do you use with Leica?

denoir,

Thanks for the reminder. I did a cruise about three years ago from Athens to Venice and for all 6 of us in the group, the Dalmation coast was the most beautiful. We stopped in in Montenegro, Dubrovnik and Split.

Your captures here are great and make me want to go back and see more. Too bad the flights are so expensive to get there.

Luka -- Impressive work, as always! You provide such a wonderful look into these locations. Your eye and brain are your best equipment. Looking forward to more.

Is it allowed to comment on your pictures, or "great images" is all you/we can handle
I like D6 a lot, a nice real side street. Wouldn't change anything.
D2 is great, but I would spend much more time on it - clean up the modern stand/poster
on the right side, maybe even get rid of the lamp and those flags cut off by the building
on the right side. D3 would be great with any kind of interesting sky, as it is now,
I much prefer D9 cropping. D12 is interesting, but I would go for a contrasty look (wait for sun
to come up and create strong shadows), it seems too flat to see the shapes.
D8, D11, D13 or D16 are below your average level, you could have skipped those IMO.

Mirko, sure The tripod was a Gitzo 1541T Traveller and I have an Acratech GP ballhead mounted on it.

Most of the shots above were with shot with a pile of ND filters mounted on the lens + a CPL. I generally very rarely use filters so this was an exception.

Thanks for the feedback Andrew

D2, yes, it would probably benefit from a cleanup.

D3, I agree the D9 is better

D12, was after sundown, so I didn't have much choice of shadows there.

D8, yeah

D11, a bit conventional perhaps. I had a better version with a boat in the lower right corner but it had camera shake blur..

D13, I don't know, I like the geometry of it.

D16 - really? IMO it's the best shot of the lot

I think D9 and D12 are my favorites from the first series. Apparently I like roofs.
D7 is impressive, but I don't like the saturated blue sky (I know, a global WB doesn't work for such images).

P6 and P7 are great! The greens look a bit overcooked/oversaturated to me in all of your shots actually (the ones that have green in it) -- as of a polarizer was used and then some more saturation was added.

That is really funny maybe I'm so used to the rocks like that
as I have tons around here? To me it's not geometrical enough
to be a great picture, too random, the reflections are not clear enough.
But I'm glad you like it

Luka - thanks for posting these sets. I was wondering when we would finally see some shots from your vacation. My favorites from the first are D3 and D7. I'm not even going to try and pick a favorite from Plitvice lakes.....though P2, P5 and P7 really stand out for me.

I really like p1. Slow shutter is a great call with water. The Zeiss 18 looks awesome although the distortion in d8 was a distracting for me. What exactly didn't you like about the m9 on a tripod?
Nice series

From the Plitvice series I like P1 and P2 best, but overall I prefer the Dubrovnik images.
Contrary to Andrew and Luka I find D3 much better than D9.

Hehe, funny indeed as I thought your objection was that it was too geometrical

Apart from the standard rules of third, it's a rather direct golden ratio composition:

First, the M9's viewfinder has parallax compensation - i.e the frame lines move around when you change focus. So you must focus before you do the framing. And changing the framing is very cumbersome when the camera is attached to the tripod. It's quite common that you end up messing up the focus while you are moving around the tripod. Since you only see the focus in the rangefinder patch in the center of the frame, you can't really see if you have messed it up or not if the focus point doesn't happen to be center frame. So you have to try to guess by zooming in on the image on the (low res) LCD using an image preview that doesn't allow you to check pixels at 100%.

Second, frame lines are approximate. If you want a very exact composition it is easy to take a couple of handheld shots until you get it perfect. On a tripod this is a cumbersome process because of the first point.

Third, when doing long exposures (that's when I use a tripod) it does mandatory noise reduction that is as long as the exposure time.

I hope Luka won't jump on me for going a bit off topic, but
Boris, do you mind explaining why? To me it's an interesting subject as I always
struggle with this kind of typical "red roofs" shots. I think just roofs are not enough
to make it interesting. I only shoot it if I have a great sky or if there is a great
landscape behind, like Tuscany for example, or if I'm lucky - both.
But even then, I have found if I shoot too wide, it's still confusing a bit.
A couple of examples (I know, not so great) from Venice and my choice of framing:

http://www.lightandpictures.com/Italy/pictures/5dii_8804.jpg

http://www.lightandpictures.com/Italy/pictures/5dii_8909.jpg

I also think, if the sky is not great, then at least some dramatic light is necessary
to break the boring flatness, so I prefer at least this kind of framing (again, Venice):

http://www.lightandpictures.com/Italy/pictures/5dii_8345.jpg

Do you mind explaining your approach?
