p.1 #1 · Jordan Pond

Acadia NP
Not too happy with this one.
Wrong time of day, maybe some compositional issues.
What can you do to improve it?

Thanks.

I find my eyes simply going to the big rock in the foreground. Cloud shadow more or less cuts off the left half of the background. Maybe crop to portrait with the small rocks, eliminating the left half. The two hills would be almost symetric -- but I think that will still leave too much of the cloud shadow.

We did about 1/2 of the trail around the pond about 10 years ago.

Thanks guys.
The large foreground rock bothers me too. I do think the "flip" helps. I guess it supports that notion of where the eye alights first. And it should be the "Bubbles" and those hills are called.

flipped works better but is bound to confuse those who have been there!
looks like a signficant change in color balance/temp. Intended?

I darkened the foreground rocks to make them anchor the image without holding the eye. Opened shadow details and (obviously) changed the sky.

I think I prefer the original (vs. flipped) on this one once I skewed/moved the large rock closer to the left edge. Color balance intentional, yes ... I was thinking the sun was at a lower angle than it may have actually been (i.e. hill shadows).

Flipping images left or right never seems to change my perception of their composition. It seems odd to me that others have a handedness preference. I can't recall an example where it makes a difference to me unless there is an obviously handed item within the image, such as text.

Peano,
thanks for the illustrated rework. I think further darkening of the foreground rocks looks better. May be more of a compositional problem then a PS one: the rocks are now very different in appearance from actuality.
To me, the new sky doesnt work. The shadows are disconnected from the fair weather thin clouds.
This is a place that I clearly need to return to at better times of the day and probably from a different vantage point. Interestingly, my hosts, who live 2 miles from Acadia and Jordan Pond in particular, find this composition fresh and different (they like it!). I am less satisfied.

Now all you need is a bad pun for closure.
