Was wondering if I could get some tips from my fellow FM'ers regarding how to keep track of people's names during an event that I'll be photographing. Client will be using pictures for publication work and needs accurate names of all people in the photo. I'm have a D3s and use the voice memo feature for this but was wondering what other people do.

I use the Voice memo on the D3, I also shoot a lot of portraits and for that I transfer photo to a laptop and rename.

I write names on paper with marker and shoot that before taking photo of that person.

I make write down the time of the photograph (hour, minute) and the name of the person. I use Breeze Systems Downloader Pro, which I've configured to rename the frames to the time taken. I compare that time to my list, which tells me the name of the individual.

Your workflow may be easier to assist with if we knew what your shooting.

I.E. - what kind of event is it?

Class reunion with setup/posed group shots?
Corporate function with couples shots as they walk in the door?
Triathalon with hundreds of individual shots as they run by?

That kind of information make make a better solution easier to determine.

It's a Fall family event. Client wants random family/attendee shots for monthly local magazine.

What I do for business events is bring a small note pad and back-up pen.
Take 2 images of each group. Write down the last image number which you can see on the screen.Such as IMG2336. Viewing the IMG number is a option in your custom functions or menu list and will appear with all images.
List names on the notepad, always left to right and image number. In my area you can have hispanic names, middle eastern, Japanese and too many other to ever try to guess the spelling. Spelling must be correct so simply ask and the group will spell them out.
Send into magazine with the IMG number referenced next to the name.

For that i'd just get someone in the family to give me the names of the people in the pics I want to use or do a group shot and get them to put the names to the faces and work from that.

I have done the same thing with commercial jobs. Just find someone that knows whom the guests are and get them to put the names to shots you email them.
Easy.

Thanks for the responses, everyone. It's will be very easy job. As for as event gigs, I'm used to shooting weddings where worrying about guest's names are the least of my concern. I appreciate all the feedback.

I know a college graduation company that uses a stringer system ... arcane, but effective. 1 frame, 1 card, sequential.

What I did in the same frame I shoot my color passport I insert either a group number or an individual names. So you shoot the setup shoot then behind it the actual photos for the job usually a couple pre pose per subject. I used a white board to write the info On. You could also use the frame numbers and a log but there if you rot careful you names can become skewed.thats why I do the setup shot for each subject /group maybe a few blank frames between if they look similar

This. Asking you to shoot and collect names is/can be asking a bit much when there are warm bodies around to help.
